G'day all my daughter has a problem with the auto in her VT, not having kept up with the commodores since they have become all electronic, Im hoping for a few pointers.

1st.. the problem with her box is similar to that of the old Tri-matics slipping when changing gears, it also sits in 3rd till 80k's before changing up to 4th (don't know if this is normal) and changes back to 3rd when below 80k's. I also noticed the other day when reversing it up onto car ramps that a quiet grinding/scraping sound was coming from the pan area, this was only noticeable when the bum was up on the ramps, no sound when on level ground. Now having said that it was serviced less than 12 mths ago and fluid levels and oils are all good and the trans mob recon the auto was fine at the time. I don't know if this makes a difference but it is an ex-cop car and quiet quick off the mark.

2nd.... I have heard they also have problems with the electronics that control the gear changes, is this correct? and if a replacement gearbox is needed it has to be exactly the same box that's in it ?

3rd..........any other known problems ?

4th ......... how hard is it to change to a manual is it worth the effort ?

Thanks for your time guys ! cheers Barry

The electronics in VT autos are very reliable & also quite simple. If there an issue with any of the solenoids, the check engine light on the dash will come on very quickly.

You mention the funny noise when it's sitting on a slope, that sounds like low fluid. Ignore the so-called experts & add another pint to the trans, it won't do a any damage & might give you a clue to sorting your problem.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0
