Define "series 1" and "series 2" ???
There's 3 distinct variants of the VN V6 engine/engine bay - it went through 2 major upgrades during the model run.
The engine initially had the thermostat at the rear, and a long pipe from the radiator hose to the rear of the engine. That's the most easily spotted (and hard to change) difference. There are others, like the crankshaft bolt holes on early manuals being unique, alloy rocker covers on the early motors etc etc.
The first upgrade included things like the additional overflow bottle, and a whole host of internal mods.
The second upgrade is often called the "VP engine" where the engine is fitted with a new manifold, bringing the thermostat to the front. There's a myriad of other internal changes that took place too, and even engine bay changes (radiator went back to a traditional style with a single, non-pressurised overflow).
The changes during these updates were vast. Valve springs, rockers, PCV ports, PCV location, manual crank, wiring loom, timing chain & sprockets - there's tonnes of stuff.
And the memcals..... they were regularly 'updated' and gained a new broadcast code & 4-character identity code, so there's dozens of different ones that were used throughout production.
