We had a Mazda Tribute at one stage. Started doing the same sort of thing. Had a bent engine mount bracket. The missus must have hit something like a gutter or such. (It never went off road, not that you'd want to). They replaced it and all good.

This happened to my father Inlaws Captiva (diesel) and ended up Being the power steering pump . Really sounded like the motor but take the belt off and have a listen ..

Fault finding is a dying art, if the laptop does not tell them whats wrong or it falls off then its replace stuff until it goes away.

Pathetic really! and yet so simple. take the belt off and run the engine, if the noise is still there then engine is the source of the problem. Belt on and stethoscope AC/generator/power steering/idler. Have you ever seen an old mechanic with a screwdriver listening to an engine to check for a problem. Cam noise frequency is 1/2 the crank frequency, the rest is pulley ratio.

Makes you wonder what they teach them during their apprenticeship.

My old bush mechanic mate solved a problem in seconds the Holden mechanics could not get in (6) six consecutive visits and I could not drive the car home from the dealer without it playing up. They knew it was still playing up and hoped it would just go away.
"warping inlet manifold", Coop found with a squirter can of engine oil. he knew before I got there what it was just had to workout where the leak was. Fixed it and took it straight to the dealer, drove straight into the service bay and waited for the mechanic and service manager, eventually they appeared and I ripped it up them, clowns! SIX visits and I could not make it home (3k's) and returned,
eventually they released my car last and packed up and fled before I could return!

Not sure if this helps but the problem with ours was the alternator pulley bearing - it has a one way bearing inside it and that had seized...

Hi Griffo and Captivahelp I was wondering if you guys managed to get to the bottom of the issue yous had, only because I'm going through the exact same thing.
Had belt changed and also tensioner now mechanic is stumped and thinks it's the AC compressor.
I'm not sure if he's right but after spending lots of $$$ I'm over it.

Hi again, I eventually found a mechanic that had worked on 3 Captiva's all with the same issue as mine had, it was an issue with the crank shaft, wasn't going to be cheap to fix so we traded ours in.. The mechanic I used fixed two of the others that had issues, one he has had back many times to be serviced and its been fine since, the other one died after only another 4000 klm's after repair.. Through a Holden dealer the repair quoted was around 8k, yep, that's not a typo, $8000.. The mechanic I found was around 3k, I never had mine repaired as it also had an injector issue which was getting into the couple of thousands again to fix.. It was a shame as we though it was a fantastic car, great power for the 2 litre turbo, drove beautifully and comfortable...but when things started to go wrong, they went wrong in a big way!

Good luck with yours, I hope yours has a much simpler, cheaper fix!!

Mine is a Holden Captiva Sx 2009 Diesel.

I just recently started with this problem, and had drive belt replaced.

Now, mechanic asked me to bring in on Monday, but I'm worried...

You can check the video I attached along with it. It's the chirping noise and then the vibrating engine noise. Mechanic said it is the tensioner. He is so effing confident that I'm worried now.

Anybody have come across this problem previously and what was the fix.

To be honest I'm worried about money, however, more importantly it's the time and stress with this issue that is worrying me more.

" Yeah, it was the alternator pulley. Just get the pulley replaced and it should do. Trial and error though because your condition could be a little different to mine."
