Out of interest, what parts on HKTG's were imported? I believe by HKTG, holdens had to be a certain percentage Aussy built parts and a small percentage allowed for imported parts.
Maybe the power steer setups where USA for example?

M21 and M22 bellhousings, clutch fork, and probably clutch.
M21 and M22 shifter mechanism.
HK GTS gear knob.
HK GTS steering wheel.
Salisbury housing centre casting and axle tubes.
Probably power steer setup as above.

Probably other stuff too, Simon and Dave will have a good idea on this stuff!

Just for interests sake, the same air conditioning compressors were found on John Deere and Chamberlain tractors of the 70's and 80's and I have also seen the same style power steering pumps used as a small hydraulic pump on john deere round balers. So i would be suggesting that they were not actually a GM part but a generic part with a GM part number on them.

The GM A6 air cond compressor was designed & manufactured by GM & onsold to many other companies, including Ford, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, M/Benz etc.

The same goes for the power steering pumps. These were designed & built by the Saginaw division of GM & again onsold to many other manufacturers. Even the Australian Ford Falcon has GM Saginaw p/st pumps on their 6-cyls from the 1983 XE to 2002 AU.

AFAIK Dave Salisbury cast centre with tubes came over as an assembly, and GMH welded the ends and spring perches on and had the axles made here. I suppose it is possible the tubes were done here too, but if you look at the puddle welds where the tubes are fixed to the cast centre they are identical to those on Camaros of the same era.

The reason I suggested the heater box drain tube/bung was it has a part number starting in 3 which most of the US stuff had, plus this part number is a common number for Camaro, Firebird etc. Not sure if they are the same thing but part number suggests they are.

If you look in the HK-HG parts catalogue there is heads of part numbers with 3 at the front, mostlyengine and gearbox bits but also lots of other stuff like washers, tumblers in locks and ignition switches etc.

Why is that ^^^^ item $30 here and $10 there?

I am fully aware of market size and economy of scale, BUT if that item is made in China and exported why is three times the price here?

Same reason the Pontiac GTO was stuff all in the US and $60k here as a CV8! And the same reason a twin cab 4x4 V6 auto Toyota Tahoma is approx $28k US plus onroads, and here it is $54k plus onroads as an SR5 Hilux.

The reason Australians pay more for the same goods as other countries is simple. We are seen as a soft touch. Nothing to do with the cost of importation or economies of scale. Buying online, really high lights these differences in price. Often I can buy the same product overseas cheaper, including shipping. Sometimes for less then half the cost here. This is very apparent with performance parts.

yes that drain bung is straight from th states. & although many use it in HKTG its not correct. HKTG from factory used different type being thin rubber like a bike tube

Ah, makes sense now. I wonder why they used the same part number? I just looked at that part number doesn't appear in early HK parts catalogues, but appears later. I wonder if the original types were replaced with a US part which did the job for aftermarket sales? This isn't without precedent in parts catalogues.

Greetings, You need to be very careful here with your statement. The very basic Holden car had the highest local content. It was close to 99% and for good reason. As the options were applied to the various models the local content figure came crashing back to earth. Even the materials used in the seats of different models impacted on the local content. A Brougham has special latex foam padding that came from Asia (look at the padding in an original Brougham and you will see the foreign markings on it). Regular cars used local foam padding. Many items mentioned already like switches, etc., were local versions of the U.S. items so they were different and counted towards the local content figure. Parts for the cars came from all over the world.

Greetings, More so the materials underneath, but certainly the Brocade used in HK and HT Brougham. HG was a local product.
