I am mechanically challeneged so could someone please help with identifying if this is a LSD. I pulled the centre out and it has Holden 7437394 and 3.08 S.D stamped on it. Also 2991 02 which appears are actually written on it. Diff was removed from a HK Monaro but on the plate near the diff yoke it is 2.78 stamped. Thanks. |

Does it have a V8 yooke or a 6cyl yoke on it? The crownwheel will tell you the ratio, it is stamped on the outer edge and the case will be 2 piece if LSD. If it is in the housing, try turning an axle to see if it is LSD or not. |

Yes it has a V8 yoke. The ratio of 3.08 is stamped on the crown wheel. Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean / how do you tell if the case is 2 piece? |

Hemisphere comes apart to service the LSD. You should be able to see the springs behind the thrust blocks inside if it is an LSD. |

Further question. How do you tell the condition of the diff if it is not in a car? |

One way without pulling it apart is to look at the teeth in the center as they get sloppy, as the teeth sit further out on each other due to the shims wearing out behind the gear and the casting. Look at all the teeth as they should be smooth and shiny not dull or pitted as then it has worn through the hard facing.
