Hi all. Iv being told that the Vh SLE shadow tone paint codes on late cars have only 1 paint code and u have to identify if it's a true shadow tone by the trim code. Is yhis true?
I have just picked up a OCT83 381 pack with both paint codes on the tags. Is these rare?

There's no hard & fast rule for the paint code stamping.
- Early tags (to the end of '81) show paint & top, and have 2 codes.
- '82 onwards tags only have a "paint" section, as "top" was replaced by the build date. It is the majority of these ones that only have Mercury Silver (2J011) listed as the paint code.
- There are quite a few, particularly around '83, where both codes are put on the paint line. I've seen probably close to 9 or 10 like this, compared to 40-50 with only Mercury.
It could have been plant specific, as the VH SL/E was made in multiple plants.
Cheers,

Mick

Markings like that are normally just production and/or inspection marks.

Tag says its a Tahitian Blue / Mercury Silver shadowtone.
Cheers,

Mick

A Top 30 SL/E was a limited run of VH SL/Es, built for the Top 30 Holden dealers in Australia during 1981.

They were fitted with the HDT hi-output motor & many unique minor items & can be identified by the plaque on the glovebox which also states the dealer's name.

Are all shadow tones painted like the car in the picture? thinking about painting mine factroy colours again, its been painted blue, Also im freshing up the 253 new bearings etc and there is numbers stamped on the block where the sump bolts on.Each cyclinder/conrod lines up with a number, oneside something like 11 9 6 10 -otherside 10 8 11 6... motor still had factroy bearins dated 1980-82...Any idears what the numbers could mean???

No, the Top 30 paint scheme layout is different to regular Shadowtones.

Commodorenut might have a pic he could post.

If you go to google & click on images, then search for "VH SLE SHADOWTONE" you'll get heaps of pics.

While not all of those images are original shadowtone schemes, you'll get the general idea.

The original ones have the boot, roof & bonnet painted in the main colour, along with the to couple of inches of the doors. From that point down, the rest is silver (Mercury Silver is the only lower colour available on a VH SL/E Shadowtone). Separating the 2 colours is a pinstripe in the acent colour, which is actually painted on, using a mask.

The original 6 shadowtone colour combos available when new were:
Indigo/Mercury (dark blue, silver)
Tahitian/Mercury (medium blue, silver)
Cabernet/Mercury (deep burgundy, silver)
Venetian/Mercury (light burgundy, silver)
Spruce/Mercury (dark green, silver)
Rhone/Mercury (medium green, silver)

You may find more info in google images by searching for those colour names, like "VH Spruce Green" and "VH Cabernet" etc etc to see what the colours are like.
Cheers,

Mick
