G'Day

I have a brake issue with my HQ Coupe rebuild and was looking for some suggestions. I am fitting a 402 Chev and was going to upgrade the brakes but this means I have to go to a larger diameter rim. My problem is that I want to keep the GTS rims so what are my options, will the rebuilt standard HQ brakes be ok or is there an option to improve the brakes that allow me to keep the GTS rims? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

How about some 15' GTS rims- ex Pontiac? That might give you
extra space for a larger disc & caliper combo.

Or ask the HQ racers & find out what front brakes they run. Odds are
their brakes get more punishment than you'll give them.

The speed limit on the open road will allow you to keep the standard brakes irrespective of the size of the engine and how much power it puts out. In an emergency, you usually only get one go at either stopping or avoiding the pending disaster. The factory braking system is best here as it will work fine when stone cold as you don't get any warning as to when you need to pull up in a hurry. You don't have a chance to warm up for it.

Besides, if you want to go really fast, we are told that good brakes will only slow you down!

I'm with D.A. Barnes on this one.

As long as the brakes are in good serviceable condition, you are using quality disc pads & the rears are adjusted correctly, HQ-WB brakes are more than enough for all except competition use.

New replacement rotors are quite cheap & new rear drums are now available again. You will find an overhaul, using stock components much more cost effective than most conversions.

If you want to go to a factory upgrade, fit an HZ or WB disc rear end with the appropriate m/cyl & proportioning valve etc.

Hi Premier 350, D.A. Barnes and Dr Terry, thanks very much for the replies and apologies for my late reply as I have been away. Being a manual the brakes aren't relied on as much as an auto for general driving duties so another plus for stock brakes I suppose. I had in mind a retro GTS where it looks original but with subtle upgrades including the drivetrain however I am very keen on original GTS rims. Another option is a 16" or 17" aftermarket GTS rim look a like that will allow me to fit upgraded brakes, are these available?
