Hi All Does anyone have an opinion on the use of engine flush products such as that made by Wynns. Especially interested in views on its use in older engines and frequency of use.I meet some mechanics/ enthusiasts that seem very keen on the regular use of this while others seem less so. What do you guys think?

I like to use it on engines that are susceptible to sludge buildup because of a lack of proper PCV - which is most modern engines these days. Used from early days in the engine's life, it keeps engines nice & clean inside (my experience with a 6.0L VE, and a VS 3.8L Ecotec prior to that). My VE has probably the worst sort of usage for build-up. It mainly does short trips without any sustained high speed running to burn everything off properly, and that's the main reason I continue to use it.
Years ago we had a demo at a car club meeting from the Wynns guys. They showed photos of transit vans that were getting a "meatloaf" buildup inside the rocker cover. I had already been using it prior to the demo, but it made me think of what could happen (although it was an extreme example).
However, I heeded the warnings of an engine builder from years ago, and never used it in any Holden 308/304. Everyone I know who has, ended up clogging the oil pickup with gunk, and had to drop the sump to fix it.
You'd also face similar problems if you used it on a seriously sludged up engine. |

I brought a VN 5.0 to get the engine out for my toner project I brought the VN from a wholesaler's and low and behold the oil light come on When I got it Home. After trying a few things to see if I could fix it, as I wanted the engine running to test the Tranny that I just rebuilt(hence the car being at a whole saler's), I removed the engine and in the sump I thought it was a big foam sponge blocking the pick up, but when the valley cover was removed that was another story you could not see the lifters just the pushrods emerging from the built up gunk like they were in little cocoons. I ended up cleaning the engine on a stand leaving the heads on (lots of kero flushes, water flushes and gallons of crc) but pulling everything else apart, front timing cover, oil pump throttle body, lifters, etc. I thought the engine would be as rattly as anything but it ran as sweet as anything I was nearly going to drop it in the toner as is and worry about rebuilding it further down the track but plans change and I sold the engine but since experiencing what I saw and now know I have heard of so many other cases of 304's with blocked pick ups because of the gunk in the sump

I would not use it, as if you change ya oil at he recommended time you should not have a problem at all. But like some cars as commodorenut said it is a problem and it may be the oil they use as i have heard of a magnetic type of so called oil when it goes past it's service life it gets real gunky and others may as well. But most idiots see that the recommended oil change is 15000km and drive around town only and use mineral oil, that's just stupid.

I have only ever used it once on an old 202 fro a speedway sedan biggest mistake I ever made the thing nearly rattled itself to bits !! Other than that Im a stickler for regular oil changes , use Morey's in my Big Blocks and have always had clean engines. One of the other stunts I have used is a few quick oil changes with cheap black and gold oil and filters seemed to help clean out the engine. Thats my 2 bobs worth ;-) Cheers Barry |

You could use some black and gold oil say. 3lts then add some diesel fuel then run it for 15 to 20 min then drain and fill with good oil and replace filter I run chauffeured vehicles and do all my vehicles this way engine are all clean even withh 300000 on the clock Diesel is only a detergent oil so washes everything

I used it in my diesel Rodeo from near new and I think that along with 5000K oil changes it kept the inside of the engine cleaner. The oil used to come out cleaner that out of any other engine i've had. I wouldn't use it in an older engine

When you say older engine, do you mean an engine with loads of km's on the clock or an older design like a 308? Cheers Richard

Older engines that have done loads of round town work never getting hot sludge up. If you put that stuff in it will dislodge this build up and block up oil ways and oil pick ups. If you change your oil regularly then you won't get the buil up in the first place.
