My father had a HG Kingswood ute (ex police) that he bought at an auction in 1974 which had a 173 fitted I took over ownership of the ute in the later 80's but every time I would go to get parts for the ute eg radiator hoses etc I was forever being told that no HG was fitted with a 173. Would of this just been a fill in ute until Holden released the HQ so it picked up the running gear of the future HQ or do you think in a short period of time it had had an engine change?

HG commercials remained on sale until HQ commercials were released around 11/71. They got 173 and 202 engines as HG engines ceased production at the start of HQ passenger vehicle production early in 1971. Unique to HG parts would have been stockpiled for use like trimatics etc. Same thing occured in LC, it got the 173 as 2850 and 2850S. You can pick these HG's readily by their chassis number, it has an A in front of it eg AHG34567A. The engines have unique identifiers: GD, GL, GL and GM and the engine numbers are from the HQ engine number sequence, same for LC. If there were any 253 utes or vans built during this period they'd be stockpiled engines, which is I believe also what they did for the 308 engines used in the CKD South African SS. I remember Dr Terry commenting that the 173 and 202 HG's have a few unique bits like heater hose fitment, as the HQ 6cyl engines are slightly different to 161 and 186.
