Hi, I notice that where my front sway bar mounts screw into the chassis the threads in a couple of the holes are stripped. Looking at it closely it appears that they have simply drilled a hole and run a thread tap through it, is this a factory fitment or an aftermarket fitment? The chassis steel seems pretty soft and not overly thick so it doesn't surprise me that it ended up stripped, seems pretty rough though? Has anyone else had this problem and any suggestions on the best way to rectify it or do I just drill and tap a larger hole and put a slightly bigger bolt in? I am a bit concerned if I do this it may strip again, however I didn't strip it initially so I don't know if it was over tightened, any suggestions?

Thanks

Just to add to this if I do retap to a larger bolt would I be better off with a unf thread and maybe reduce the torque a bit and use some loctite? Also does anyone have an idea of a recommended torque setting for the bolts given the issues above?

Thanks

Had the same problem in a HQ once- rust on the "nut' in the chassis was the culprit. I just drilled & tapped it for a 3/8" UNC rather than the standard 5-16" UNC.

As far as I can remember, there was a captive nut welded inside the chassis rather than just relying on the thickness of the chassis metal.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris, thanks for the advice! My car is a 1972 model and it has definitely been punched through and then tapped through the chassis and resulting flared metal on the inside. I did however drill and tap the holes out to 3/8" but went for UNF as I thought it may help hold better with the extra threads. I am paranoid however about it restripping as it feels fragile so I am going to use a flat washer and no spring washer with loctite when I fit the mounts. If it does cause further problem I will look at drilling out the holes a bit larger and weld in a flared nut upside down. Hopefully the post may help someone else in the future.
