ADR27A. Introduced with HX plus some trial HJ's, and on LX from 6/76. I think it also applied a bit later on to commercials and 4x4, somewhere mid '78. |

ADR27A was probably the one that had the most impact at the time, but if you're building a project of some sort, there were several different ADRs to allow for.
Pre-70 - no ADR, you can almost do what you want. ADR27 (1973) - closed PCV & idle mixtures ADR27A (1976) - controls of many types to reduce NOx, CO etc. ADR27B (1982) - further limitations (try & register a VH Commodore with an HX motor) ADR27C (1983) - further amendments (quite minor) ADR37 (1986) - unleaded fuel - cats required etc.
There are other later rules, but it's best to work on a year by basis, especially from 2000 onwards.

The was also the introduction of a carbon canister in Jan 1975. Might seem trivial but it also means a sealed fuel tank, associated vapour equipment at the tank, vapour line, sealed vent bowl on the carby or carby modified to capture vapour for return to the canister and the canister itself. |

The strange thing about the canister intro, was that there was no ADR just for that item. Also, I've put several 1975/76 pre-ADR27A cars thru Blue slips etc. with no mention of the canister. Do you have any official literature on the canister intro, other than its brief mention in the HJ Service Manual Supplement ? Dr Terry |

Nothing specific yet Terry. It will be in GMH service letter/bulletins that I have to go through soon. There is hints of it in places like parts catalogues and features manuals where the carby numbers change at canister introduction. The introduction of the canister actually co-incides with the change to a shared manual and auto carby as both engines from this time need ported vacuum for the canister.
I'll see if there is some obscure reference in the features manual eg an amendment date to an export vehicle package where evaporative emissions controls are deleted.
Other interesting observation, look at any 1974 HQ commercial ADR plate. Then look at any HJ commercial one. Note what is missing from the HJ. ADR27.
I know 12/74 HJ NSW passenger vehicles didn't get a canister as my Premier never had one, plus it has HQ tank, vents, carb etc. It has the underbody clips though for the 3 x lines (fuel, vapour return (a/c) and tank vent) but only 2 x lines. All 1/75 NSW HJ's i've seen have had canisters. But I do remember something about NSW and canisters in 1975, so might be a State thing. |

Found it.
Production Option NA9 - EVAPORATIVE EMISION CONROL SYSTEM - Effective until Jan 1 1975. Mandatory with XX8 Isuzu Requirements for vehicles exported to Japan Package. Not with N10 Dual Exhaust System. Only with L31 V8 Engine together with M41 Transmisssion. Applicable only on 8WP35,69, 8WS and 8WT.
The same text about "effective until Jan 1 1975" is repeated against NA9 under the details for XX8.
So this sort of leads me to believe Japanese XX8 had the evaporative stuff prior to Jan 1 1975, but after that it was standard so no longer part of the XX8 package.
Then also K75 - Delete Evaporative Emisssions Controls Only for Export Orders. Effective April '75 vehicle production. Shown as applicable to all HJ models. |

I realise Holden's production requirements, but what I was referring to any RTA or any Federal (ADR type) rules that an engineer or RTA rego dude could refer to.

No, that is what I was getting at, it isn't explicitly spelled out when it was introduced, just the bits of obscure references that point to the introduction timeframe.
What is confusing is for example in the HJ parts catalogue, all through it but specifically in group 3.130 where the canister is it indicates that the canister is part of ADR27 and ADR27A which we know it isn't. |

Pre July 1976. You are better off fitting the whole injected setup including the little carbon canister mounted to the radiator by a little spring clip, connected to the engine by little plastic tubes. Just connect that canister to the vent line from your tank. If it doesn't have one then it can't hurt to run one, and seal the tank. Stops fuel vapours getting to the atmosphere.
