I have a tandem trailer that does not have brakes. I am tossing up whether to fit electric or hydraulic. I think electric is easiest, but don't know which is best. What is the general opinion?

Hi there, I thought about this issue when putting my tandem together and came eventually fitted mechanically operated inertia disc brakes. low maintenance, very effective and not much to go wrong. Reasonably cheap too. cheers Dave

Dave would they be overide cable type brakes? with the sliding towball head?
I have always been a bit wary of those as the cables can be difficult to made to operate equally on each wheel. also needs some maintenance if not used constantly as can get corroded up or stiff.

Just my personal opinion. I would go electric. We have a couple of race car trailers, one with mechanical brakes and the other with electric. Towing the trailer with the electric brakes is a dream, the way it pulls up and how you can adjust it at a touch of a button is fantastic. Only down side is you need to hook up an electric brake module in your car and wire it all in. But I reckon its well worth it .

Hi John, you are correct, they are overide brakes, and it is a bit trickey getting the cables equally adjusted. I put a marine stainless steel turnbuckle in mine with a marine pulley at the tow hitch. Have not experienced any seizure; yet. cheers Dave

When I built my trailer it was built as a 3tonne trailer but I only got them to rate it for 2tonne at the time with coupling over-ride drums. Axles had plates welded on for 4 wheel electric drums. Recently I fitted the 4 wheel electrics and got it changed to 3tonnes. The difference between 4 wheel electrics (even front wheels only when I unplug the rears) and the over-ride drums was amazing. The biggest advantage is you can control sway instantly. |
