Merry Christmas everyone, Just a quick question, what month in 1969 was the 308 HT 4 speed gts released?

According to Ben and Warren late in 1969. No special time for 308 4spd as 308 and auto were available at the same time. I don't know if production of HT's (other than Brougham) with 308 would have started at exactly the same time either as across the 4 x assembly plants producing 5 litre HT's I would guess it would be unlikely they would have all run out of 307's at the exact same time. I'll ask Ben next time I talk to him if he knows roughly what happened and when.

You will find all plants changed at the same time, as engines would have been assigned from a central area. More than likely the last of the 307 orders would have become 308 when they ran out of enignes for production cars (some kept as spares). Then when they ran out the brochure woould be issued.

It would have been Oct/Nov 1969 for the change over from 307 to 308.

There is no logical reason as to why a 308 4sp could not of been in the beginning as with the 253.

That is a very good point.

'Officially' the only HT initially available with a 308, was the Brougham & this was auto only.

The only other V8 combinations available at HT release, was 253 (3 or 4 speed manual only) or 307 (auto only).

Unless you purchased a 350 (& these weren't released until Aug 69) what performance options were there ?

You would have thought that the order books for the upcoming 308 4-speed (or auto) would have been that full, that maybe a special customer or 2 could have received one earlier than the rest of us.

What about pilot cars & engineering prototypes ? There would have been several such cars built before the 'official' release in late 69.

Would there have been a need Terry for pilot or Engineering cars once HT volume production started? The 308 + manual all but fitted identically to a 253. 308 and auto was already fitted to Brougham. I would have thought all this would have been done during HK production, either to HK's or pilot HT's

When and where was the fist holden v8 block made? I heard chev made the first block and crank in the u.s? any truth in this does that mean the tooling for them was made there as well?

All development & casting work for the 253/308 was carried out in Australia.

As a matter of fact, the Holden V8 is the only mass production automotive engine to be designed & built entirely in Australia. The Grey & Red 6-cyl engines were US designs.

I asked Ben about 307-308 changeover. He has original 308 powered non-Broughams from September from some assembly plants and 307 cars still being assembled in October. As I suspected it didn't all happen at the same time across all plants. Maybe it was intended for that to happen but not in practice.

Yes they may have made some ready for release, but that does not man the public could buy them then.

Just like we know there were HTs built in April 68, including GTS350s, but you could not order one until June/July/August 69.

There would be a date that they officially became available for the dealers/public to order. What would be interesting is the manufacture date of the last HT 307 and the warranty date of the first 308 non Brougham sold to the public (ie not an internal use car)

The final breakdown of the 307s at each plant might also be interesting. Some plants may have been selected to runout the 307s, ie say the Melbourne plant, so if you were in Brisbane and ordered the 307 Premier, it was made in Dandenong rather than Acacia Ridge, as would normally be the case.

Agree Warren, would be interesting to see those dates.
I'd still expect some 308 powered cars to be built at some assembly plants prior to the last 307's from others, cars get delayed for various reasons. I'm not talking huge timeframes, just a week or so. I think it was Dandenong Ben says he has no later 307's recorded but other plants they appear in Oct '69 vehicles. May just mean he hasn't found some yet, but it also may mean 307's were getting very scarce at Dandenong like you state.
I do know someone who ordered a "5litre" HT GTS expecting a 307 but when it arrived it was a 308. This was a NSW order, but don't know when exactly.

Byron, that would be normal practice, just like 327 second type etc. The old sprry we have upgraded. this shows that orders were being taken for 307s that became 308s, which would indicate that the 308 was kept quiet until 307s ran out as such.
