I just got given a 173 engine. I was wondering if anyone knew much about these. The engine prefix is XQD88etc Holdenpedia tells me its either hg hq or hj but what about the X?Are they hard to get parts for like pistons etc. It does seem to be in good nick but just wondering for the future Edited by user Sunday, 12 January 2014 5:57:29 AM(UTC)

Holdenpedia is a little out on that one.
XQD is an LX/UC 2850 (173) hi-comp with auto trans. The 88... bit indicates that is more likely UC. QD is a 'normal' HQ-HZ 173 hi-comp & the X is added if it gets fitted to a Torana auto in ADR27A.
Like most other Holden 6s of the era, parts are relatively easy, but are getting more difficult as the years progress.

Qx88xxxx appear in HX-HZ around August-October 1977 so most likely from a late LX. The X will be stamped differently to the rest of the number as it is stamped in the assembly plants like Statesman 11 and 12. 173 is fine in a HQ, it was the standard/base engine for HQ and most of HJ unless something else bigger was standard for the model/lux level. Will also be fine in a HK although a powerglide may not be its best friend. The low comp version of the 173 was standard in CF Bedford until the later 70's. A 173 is a good little engine, not a powerhouse but if in good condition go fine. You will be able to help it along a bit by doing minor mods like HEI ignition off a blue motor and a decent exhaust. |
