The axles have a spacer to position the bearing differently between disc & drum. Any VB-VL disc setup will fit your diff, but you also need to change the master cylinder & handbrake cables too, as they are both different on disc rears.
If you get a whole diff, you can also swap the axles over to eliminate the issue. Wagon diffs are different to sedan, and much harder to find in disc form, so just look for a sedan or wagon diff & swap the brakes and axles.
Problem with a VK is there are 2 different types of diff - the 6 ran the small salisbury (same internals as a banjo) but in early 1985, this changed to a borg warner. They are quite different. Check your tags - GU5 is the borg warner. If that's what you have, just get a complete 85 VK or VL wagon disc diff, or a sedan one.
If you have a salisbury, then any VB-VK(84) 6 or 253 diff is suitable as a donor - sedan or wagon - swap the brakes & axles over. If the donor diff doesn't have decent rotors or calipers, source better ones from a VR/VS, as the live axle discs were the same VB-VS (and standard disc from VN) |

also i would imagine that they can be differentiated (ho pun!) by the fact the banjo is withdrawn from the front and has a plain pressed rear pan while the salisbury comes out the back and has a bolt on pan?

All Commodores are rear-loaded diffs - only the internals from the banjo carried into the VB-VK(84) small salisbury fitted to 4, 6 & 253.
5.0L ran the larger salisbury with the egg-shaped cover (often called a 10 bolt). 85 saw the VK 6s go to a Borg warner, while the 5L kept the sals. In VL the B/W took over the lot. You can pick the B/W by the flat circular drive flange, instead of the yoke for the uni to bolt into with U-clamps. |

So you don't need to worry about crush washers and the like that made the old salisbury such a nuisance as they (washers) became unavailable? mine is a late 85 but not at home for a week or so so can't eyeball it.

You're not going to be taking the pinion out, so leave that whole lot alone - all you need to do is pull the axles, change the backing plates, fit up the disc-brake axles (from a matching donor diff - be it sals or b/w) and then fit the brakes, brake lines, handbrake cable, then bleed & adjust. |
