I have an XF wagon on LPG with a 3 spd auro b/w gear box. Am looking at options to improve economy (many highway km's travelled)and hear that the b/w Model 40 g/box fitted to the ZL fairlanes had an internal o/drive - ie you could not select o.d. from gear selector. Does anyone know if this is true ? Other option is to change to a lower diff - any thoughts?
thanks Andrew

from what i know there is no difference between a xf and zl box.i have never heard of an overdrive in these boxes.a 2.77 diff would make a difference if your car doesn't already have 1.a manual would also be cheaper on fuel but you'd have to find 1 then c

No the b/w model 40 found in XF's and ZL's doesn't have an over drive. 3rd gear is a 1:1. later model g/boxs from late EA and up to AU have a 4th gear over drive but fitting one of these boxs may be difficult and expensive. a better option may be to get a

They weren't very popular and the aren't very strong. A few people have them behind their V8's.

E series gearboxs wil be harder to fit to X series cars because the starter motor is on the other side (passengers side) of the motor on E series...
Just a quick thought...

sorry mate i didn't realise you had a wagon.xf sedan and wagon diffs are different because a wagon has leaf springs and a sedan has coils(which means different mounting points).a lsd spins both wheels where a normal diff only spins 1 on dry bitumen.it don

QUOTE: "an LSD spins both wheels". A more adequate description would be: An LSD delivers power to the wheel with the most traction. If for instance a vehicle has one rear wheel on the road and the other on the gravel shoulder. initial accelerati
