Has this subject come up here before ? ?. In the manufacture of the HK and HT 6 inch road wheels ( and most likely many others as well ). WHY THE DIFFERENT PROCESS used in assembling the 2 sections of the wheel ? . i.e Spot weld, Arc weld and a combination of the two. Some wheels that I have here, in various dates include:
HK 3/68 date stamp, Arc welded only.
HK 7/68 date , Both Spot and Arc weld.
HK 12/68 date , Spot and Arc
HT date 5/69 Spot only.
HK date 5/70 Spot only,
All standard 6 inch wheels.
Why the change in the process ?.
Curious also the HK 3/68 dated wheel. Thats 4 months before the release of the GTS.
and the HK dated 5/70, that date is well past the release of the HT.
The 7/68 one I know came off a 327 GTS.
What would the others have been made to suit.?

HT 9/69 date stamp, Spot only (2places)
The wheels are original HT GTS350.
I have a distant memory of wheel problems in the early racing days, requiring a modification. Maybe someone else knows the specifics.

ROH made a lightweight wheel with slots for the HT GTS350 after the brake failures at Sandown in 1969. The tool that cut the slots was broken in 1971 and no more were made until a batch recently when the tool was fixed. |

The 6-inch steel wheel was available as an option from the beginning of HK production, it wasn't exclusively a GTS thing. 3/68 would be OK, as a matter of fact, a late 67 stamping is possible. The 5/70 HK wheel would have been made as a replacement part. Many spare parts are produced in batches well after the production of the car itself ceases. I can't answer the question re: the various welding processes, but back in the early 60s we had spot welded, arc welded & riveted. Dr Terry |

Matbe its something to do with type of body, i.e. uts might have welding and rivetting because they carry heavier loads for instance.
the HQ -WB tonners had fully welded rims so they could handle ton loads, and the vn etc utes have different wheels as well, I have a rim in the back yard stamped "utility" obviously for a reason.

HQ-WB 1-Tonner & VN-VS Ute rims are made from thicker metal than their sedan/wagon counterparts.
In the older cars (HK etc.) the weld type would vary with load requirement also.

The original 6 inch rims on my HK Monaro are stamped 12 68 HOLDEN 22 A and are arc and spot welded.

I had some hk 6 inch wheels stamped 6/76, wonder when they stopped making them?

You can have a set with today's date stamp on them if you like. The same for the 6" HT350 wheels. There's a company in Melbourne that are making them from parts from the original tooling.

I think they have stopped making them again, it was a one off batch afaik. |
