ol' mate is trying to track down his Fathers 1976 LE and has the owners manual still and would like to know what these numbers may tell him...
...VIN No H 899854 Eng No QT 781834...will these numbers help him to track it down?

The first number you have is the PSN, production sequence no, and is only part of the VIN. The full VIN would be 8Q37(G or H)TH899854X. The VIN is unique so finding the actual car will be harder than proving its the right one. James |

Yes they will (added possibly...). I'll see what I can find out.
Can you tell me what dealer sold it in the log books? And the chassis number recorded for the car, plus if it is recorded (unlikely) the firewall number for it. |

It isn't a known car at this stage on the Monaro Register which makes it a little less likely it still exists, but it may still be out there. The details I posted above may help too. What State was it sold new in? |

I knew a guy 20 years ago that claimed he had 3 HX LE's stashed in his Dads shed in QLD. He didnt ever plan on ever doing anything with them. So they quite possibly would still be there.
But you just never know what is out there in the sheds somewhere. One day they will show up. Might not be in our lifetime though. :(

.. thanks for the help and interest fellas...i checked those numbers in the owners manual myself this arvo...they were the only numbers, although the Dealer and original Vic rego number was there, I didn't take those details... that info will be forthcoming....cheers Edited by user Friday, 13 March 2015 6:37:58 AM(UTC)

Was at my Uncles place, 38 years ago and when I pulled everyone was out the front. Uncle arrives with brand new LE coupe, WOW from Boyded Randwick about 5 k's away. Just recently at a family meeting I hear that at another family meeting, Uncles step daughter's partner arrives in a LE coupe sad but salvageable. My cousin, says my dad had one of those, has it got a log book? Are you s***ting me, in the logbook is his dads name and address, WIBF'ed. Keep looking you just might be that lucky. I got to find out the rest of this story, what a cracker. Car is in central west NSW.

I suppose with only about 580 of them made and they were spread across the country the chances of such a thing happening local to you are reasonable - probably as good as the long shot horse you'd put $1 on! |

...a little more info .. the LE was purchased new from Kevin Dennis Holden in Sunshine (Braybrook) Vic and was thought to have eventually ended up in Western Australia... ...it had new standard Victorian rego (still to be confirmed)... then personalised plates later when still with the original owner...will the rego details help? ...also..were these coupes ever known as LE Monaro's? If the rego papers have a chassis number it will.
LE's were never a Monaro, only LE coupe. |

I have 2 friends with LE's both here in Vic ie Berwick and East Bentleigh. Will have to take down their numbers oneday out of interest.

All you need to get is the chassis number, firewall number and either the body number (off the body plate) or the end of the VIN number that looks like H899854. Everything else is a known quantity off these. The firewall number vs the chassis numbers are particularly interesting off these cars as they must have been the most stuffed around, delayed nightmares of all Holdens to produce. |

They cut the HJ firewall out correct? Why was this? Isn't the only main difference the main wiring harness hole? It must have been a nightmare doing a major modification like that at the production factory?

Correct, the firewalls were removed and replaced with HX ones. The wiring harness hole is one difference and probably the only one that matters for an auto. They most likely did it in the body plant as the completed HJ bodies were only bodies in white (ie bare steel covered in a couating). Lloyd Beck didn't want to build LE's for this and many reasons but John Bagshaw won out. There is a fair bit of detail in one of the recent AMC magazines about the hassles building them. |

Yeah I read that article. Was a real disaster to build. Then they couldn't sell them easily. I wonder if you can tell that they changed the firewall.

tony campese from shack auto salvage in sunshine vic wreck out about 20-30 LE coupes and at least a 100 or so other coupes and WB statesmans, good chance it was in there as he would buy every coupe he could find at the time

...thanks for the reply...was he tied up with Billy Agius? The only reason i ask is that i never knew that so many of 'em got wrecked under my own nose LOL...the Western suburbs and Sunshine is my old stamping grounds...cheers
