Hi all.

In my adventures with my brougham brakes, I discovered the Diff housing has been modified to suit the HG brake line pattern. (Along with someone replacing the diff brake lines with copper). When I realied this, it made me suspicios about the center, which is supposed to be a 2.78 LSD. I've never had the car on the road, I bought it as a non starter.

Sure enough, when I checked the rotation, the wheels contra rotated. I didn't even bother to check the ratio, I was bummed.

There's a HT V8 2.78 LSD on eBay atm. The seller has repainted it, but otherwise it seems to be as-is. http://pages.ebay.com/li...alt=web&id=281472183488

If I buy it, and it's dodgy (which I won't know for years at the rate I'm going) what are reco prices running at? Should I just go straight for a 9" and be done with it? I want this car to look original, but I'm not to fussed about authenticity

20 years ago as a kid I took my 186s HT Prem for a diff reco and they told me it was shot and couldn't be repaired, so they sold me a regular diff. I still think they scammed me, but didn't know enough to get the old one back.

LSD banjos have been scarce for 15+ years now, and for a Brougham you need 2.78 or 3.08 which all the LH-LX Torana guys are chasing so even harder to source - at least you only want coarse spline gears. As you say a used one may be buggered and not repairable. If it was me i'd look to another diff like a 9" as you suggest, or a VN Borg Warner or even a VB-VK 10-bolt.

If you really want an LSD banjo try Shane at Grindrod Automotive. He can build you a new 2.78 LSD coarse spline centre with new OEM spider gears.
Phone number is (03) 9587 5326. Just don't expect it to be cheap!

Thanks both of you.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the spline referring to the splines on the axle? The ebay reference I posted says it's fine-spline, but from a Kingswood. At least it's a full unit, so I wouldn't need my axles.

5 minutes research on the VN-BW and 10-Bolt options has left me further confused. At least I know where I stand with a 9", as that's been the go-to diff since before I was a pup.

Oh, in revising my OP, I took out the fact the prem had an LSD when I took it in. Nicking that center was the scam, I believe.

HT isn't going to be a fine spline (23 spline) unless the axles have been specially made for it. The first fine spline banjos were in late LJ XU1 then L34 and later all V8 Torana then all banjos from a certain timeframe.

Diff Technics in Kogorah NSW can rebuild commodore salisburys with the much more readily available BW78 internals.
Takes a bit of machining work to do, on their part, but it's a good solution.
I know several guys with early Brocks who have had this done now.

Not sure if that might be an option for an earlier diff as well?
Cheers,

Mick
