Hi all. Two separate questions that may be related.

1). I've just removed a gas kit for a 1975 HJ Caprice (stock 308) with a quadrajet carbie. I need to put a suitable air cleaner back on it (gas kit had an alloy side extension thing). I did think of putting a cheaper after-market one on, mainly because the second hand ones on ebay etc. are going for upwards of $250. However, whilst looking on ebay, all the ones for sale purport to be suitable for everything from the HQ to the WB. Are they all the same? What are the various "breather" holes and warm air valves on them? It would appear no after-market air cleaner assembly caters for these.

2). The charcoal canister mounted in the front driver's side of the engine bay, and has all manner of tubes connected to it, and pipes running all the way from the fuel tank. I assume this is some sort of fuel vapour absorption for emission control? Is it a legal requirement to leave it on the car for a road worthy (I'm yet to get one)? If it has to be on there, do they "re-charcoal" them?

Thanks all

Charcoal canister is for ADR 27A and was fitted to late LHs and HJs even though it wasnt needed. Doesnt decrease performance like the EGR or reduced cam timing.
The air cleaner needs the PCV connection to the rocker cover (usually passenger side) and the air preheater isnt needed similarly to the charcaol canister.

Canister was required from 1/75, it will be a 4 port canister for a 1975 HJ. For a 1975 308 HJ the aircleaner will have:

A hole in it for the PCV breather pointing towards the passenger's side rear of the engine.
A little valve fitting with 2 x outlets on it underneath for rubber tubes which runs to the air pre-heat flap on the spout and the other to a little vacuum fitting at the back of the original 7045281 Quadrajet carby.
A small metal tube fitting underneath which has a rubber tube attached which goes to an insulated steel tube that connects to the back of the driver's side exhaust manifold, then another tube comes back up from the front of the exhaust manifold to the choke operator screwed to the driver's side of the manifold.
The large round tube under the spout has a flexible hose that goes down to the stove on top of the passenger's side exhaust manifold.

The ports on the canister connect to:

Rearmost large port is plugged.
Middle large port goes to the tank line.
The round fitting on the front has 2 x outlets, the smaller purge port goes to the vacuum port on the front of the carby on the passenger's side. The larger one goes up to a T-piece above the RH front of the engine, the upright of the T goes to the PCV valve in the front of the driver's side rocker cover and the top continues to the large tube on the front middle of the carby.

if you PM me I can send you a GMH diagram for a 1975 HJ 308 auto pollution hoses.

Thanks Byron and James. Byron, I've PM'd you. James, is that to say if I remove the charcoal canister it will pass a roadworthy?

Technically yes, just make sure it's not 27a, but if it's already there and doesn't affect performance the only reason to remove it is aesthetics. I've heard of some cars being knocked back for not having it even though one was never fitted. Some inspectors are pickier/more knowledgeable than others. The main reason the HJ was a relatively short run model was the 27a changes.

You only have to be in front at the end of the race.

HJ wasn't short James, it ran from 9/74 through to 6/76 - almost 2 years. HX was 6/76 to 8/77 so much shorter. You won't find an ADR27A 1975 HJ, the trial cars were in 1976. The canister doesn't ever affect performance.

JBM, in reality there is no ADR directly related to the carbon canister, yet all manufacturers brought them in for 1975. In NSW, if the car originally had one fitted & then removed, it would be a rego knock-back.

ADR27 (late HQ) did not introduced the canister, even early HJ did not have them. By ADR27A (7/76) all cars had them & ADR27A canisters even had slight changes to the canister itself & its plumbing. All official GMH paperwork simply says introduced for 1975. At some factories late 74 cars also got them.

Not being picky but the 10/74 to 6/76 for HJ is not a "a relatively short run model". This was longer than most other Holden model series, with the exception of the HQ.

What emissions equipment is required on a 6/76 car, ADR27?

Is it just pcv and charcoal cannister?

Same as a 1975 HJ. Sealed fuel tank, canister, sealed carby fuel bowl on a quadrajet or vented to the canister for 6cyl and 4.2, PCV, warm air pre-heat on aircleaner and I think CO at idle less than 4.5%.

PCV was first introduced in Holdens in mid-1967, but the ADR27 version is 'sealed' PCV, where instead of being vented to the atmosphere at the oil cap, it is vented to the air cleaner assembly. The PCV valve itself is connected directly to manifold vacuum, as with pre-ADR27 cars.

A subtle but important difference.

I believe that the warm air pre-heat on air cleaners was V8 only for ADR27.
