Hi, I have an early HK which I am trying to gather the correct parts for to put it back to 186S spec. I've noticed most KTGs have a return spring bracket like this attached to the dashpot braket, going towards the front:


While some cars plus the HK parts catalogue and the GMH HK mechanical manual have the return spring going from the small arm on the firewall throttle linkage, to a bracket bolted on to the bosses on the manifold like this:

I've also noticed some manifolds have the bosses cast into them and some don't.
My question is can anyone tell me why there is a difference, and which type is correct for an early HK?

Do you mean early HK or early HK GTS?

I'm not certain but i'd be looking at a HR 186S. I'll check out the HK release parts catalogue and see what differs in this regard to the Monaro release catalogue and compare the two to a HR catalogue.

As HK1837 said. My factory HR 186s has the top bracket shown in your 1st post.

I just checked it out. Pictures aren't helpful. But:

HR looks different part number wise.
The HK release part number for the return spring "bracket" are the same as the yellow HK parts book with Monaro in it - 7438535.
The release book lists for RHD HK 186S a return spring bracket with 2 x bolts and washers as does the yellow book.
The return spring for RHD HK 186S from the release book vs the yellow book are different however: 7438530 (release) vs 7439744 (yellow book).
The blue 1972 HK parts book lists 2 x different return springs: 4 7/8" and 6 7/8". The shorter one is the same p/n as the the yellow book ie 7439744. The longer spring is a HT or later HK part number 2805682, as is its bracket 2806684. The HT book only lists these later "28" part numbers.

So digesting all that I reckon the photo you have above of a carby is correct for earlier HK, and that other bracket is for HT-G. Furthermore I think the parts catalogue pictures are wrong - the one in the top RH corner that says V8 looks an awful lot like the 6cyl setup as per the photo above and the V8 one is the one that says 186S RHD. The HK service manual agrees with me too!

What I can't tell you is what changed between the release HK and the yellow book with regards to the actual spring, ie why the part number revised from 7438530 to 7439744. Maybe the spring was too heavy or too light?

Thanks very much Byron, that makes sense. Now I've just got to track down a manifold with the bosses on it and one of those brackets. Thanks again.
