Hi guys Hoping someone can help me with a VH SLE I am looking at buying. It doesn't have any ID plates, it has these stamps on the left side strut. CVH051897A V004833P Would anyone know if this is an original VH sle and what the codes translate to. Regards Dave |

There is no way of confirming it's true identity from the chassis number alone. All that number tells you is that it's a late 82-late 83 model VH assembled in Adelaide.
The other number is a Victorian Police number - a number that is issued when a car has bad its original ID stolen or compromised. Despite the fact it is still stamped, this Police number will have taken over the chassis number on the registration (assuming it's still fully registered).
If it's on Victorian club rego with that CVH number as the chassis number, and not the VxxxxP number, then run a mile. Don't trust the numbers on club rego'd cars, as people have been stung from Victorian clubs not providing due diligence when checking numbers of cars they put on club rego, and shonky cars have been moved on under false pretences because of it.
No matter how much effort you put into it, without all the tags, you will never be able to prove it's an SLE by the numbers, so if you're the sort of person who wants to prove what it is, or is after an easy resale, then walk, or even run away. It will never be worth as much as an untainted car with tags.
But if you like the car, and it's a reasonable price in your eyes, then buy it & enjoy it - just be prepared for hassles if you want to sell it again, as every man & his dog will ask you to prove it's genuine, and low-ball you on the selling price.

There are some features on VH SL/Es that could be duplicated on non-SL/Es but would be noticeable, eg rear headrests. As Mick said if you like the car and its price is reasonable for a bitsa you should be fine. Body condition on these older cars is worth more than its trim level if you want to keep it for awhile. You only have to be in front at the end of the race. |

Hi Mick and James Thank you so much for the info. The car I am looking at is blue over silver in colour with dark blue interior, both in great condition with a v8. It doesn't have power windows but seems to have all other options. He is asking 4.5 k. It would be a keeper as the sle was my first car. Thanks again guys Regards Dave |

If it still has a bodyplate with a model number on it this could also give you its trim level and option pack, it was behind the drivers side shock tower or on the front of the passenger strut tower depending on whether it was an early or late build. It also has paint and trim codes. James |
