I thought there was a post on this but could not find it. Am I correct in saying that the dash paint colour forward of the dash crash pad including A pillars is satin, and all below the crash pad gloss? The console and steering column seem to be satin?? Also was red oxide used generally over all accessable bare steel everywhere including under body as the prime coat? Then would the underbody get chassis black or just get an over spray from firewall and from the sill and beaver topcoat colour? Then I am thinking a black heavy sound deadener was used sparingly on inner boot, inner guards, wheel archers in the wheel strike area? Was seam sealer used and if so where else other than the front subrame to firewall mounting area. Appreciate all your help with all these questions as I try and get the resto as good as I can.

I'm not sure enough of my facts as far as the dash and column go, but for the body the sequence is:

1/ Black etch primer over all the bare steel on the entire body shell.
2/ Red oxide primer over the black etch
3/ Body colour acrylic lacquer over the red oxide
4/ Black primer (375-1690) or black acrylic lacquer (599-5285) on the undersides of the wheelhouses, and mostly the underside of the car.
5/ Black acrylic lacquer (599-5285) on the firewall - except for GTS and Brougham and maybe Premier
6/ Black acrylic lacquer (599-5285) on the front subframe,
7/ Black acrylic lacquer (599-5285) on the front fender undersides,
8/ Warrigal Black acrylic lacquer in the engine compartment and firewall for GTS, Brougham and maybe Premier.
This lacquer is gloss by definition, but was baked and not buffed, which is why the finish can vary in gloss level so much.

Body deadener was applied to the wheelhousing section of the front fenders (and not the subframe),
the rear wheelhouses, the floor section outboard of the rear "chassis" rails as far as the beaver panel, and the underside of the spare wheel housing in addition to the areas you have mentioned above.

Seam sealer was used on all of the floor pan section joins inside the car, in the seam areas around the rear inner wheelhouse panels, to fill up the tooling holes in the floor pans, in the floor pan to sill joins, in the floor areas under the rear quarter windows (Monaro, obviously), and in quite a few other areas. The caulking compound used for the inside joins was GMH part number 7425347, also known as Elastite, full of asbestos, and obviously no longer available. Likewise, true Red oxide primer is full of lead, and also unlikely to be available anymore.

Note that some of this detail varied from plant to plant, and from car to car. For example, not all cars have the black colour on the underside of the floorpan. Your best guide is what was actually on your car.

Did they use black Etch Geoff? I know they dipped them but not the whole body got dipped.

I'm fairly sure about the etch Byron. What I'm not sure about is the dipping process. I know HQ were partially dipped, as I've seen the photos, but I remain to be convinced HTs were. Have a look at the photos below for an explanation.

1/ This is the rear spring front hanger bracket, part number 2807355, removed from the car. Note the layers - Black etch, red oxide, body colour (Verdoro Green), then black over the top.

2/ The rear seat belt anchor plate, which lives in the front of the wheelhouse. There is virtually no paint at all under this, or on the matching section of the wheel house. If it had been dipped there would have been paint there. As you can see, there was a little bit of rust.(!)

3/ The area of the floor pan where the front seat bolt nut plate mount blister is spot welded. Plenty of paint here.

4/ The front seat bolt nut plate blister. No paint inside here, apart from a little bit near the drain hole. Note that the mating faces have paint, which makes me think this was spot welded on while the paint was wet. If the car had been dipped, this area would have paint inside it.

5/ Inside the wheelhouse. Note that this is red oxide with black etch underneath. This had body deadener over the top, with no body colour or black paint at all. That's why I said not every car follows the rules.

In addition to the above, the radius rod brackets were clearly added before the car was painted at all, as they have no paint on the rear surface of them, but do have etch and red oxide primer on the front side, retaining bolts, spring washers and nuts. There is also no paint on the matching section of the wheelhouse. there was also a little bit of rust in this area. (!)

Some of this info comes from Ben, but I haven't asked the specific question regarding dipping. I guess either you or I can ask the question.

Good stuff. I'll check with the dip process. I always thought that black under the electrostatic red oxide was dip.
