Hi im looking for a bellhousing for my hk 307 to saginaw. Ive been told that they can be sourced from the states. Similar is fine but ive been told you can get the same but just have to knock out the webbing on opposite side. Can anyone tell me Where To get one from or what sort of car i should be looking at. I know my yankee cars pretty well so just need to know model type please. Thanks

The bellhousings are cast with a knockout on both sides for the clutch fork. They have 2 x casting numbers 1 or 2 x digits apart on them. The piece you knockout has the casting number on it for the opposite hand bellhousing. The casting numbers from memory end in 403 and maybe 404 (they are close to the part numbers). You can find them in the States but they are always knocked out on the wrong side. Plus most you find are missing the required boss to mount the slave cylinder on the RHS - I think I have 6 or so of this wrong type, only one of the correct type. Have a look at these auction link, look closely at the bellhousing up below the 2 x bolts either side above the clutch fork. See how on both the LH and RH have a boss there just below the hole? This is what the clutch slave needs to attach to, some of them the RHS has not got one.

Here's one without the boss:

The part number you need is 3858402. It suits a 10.5" clutch and 153 tooth ring gear/flywheel, and has a right hand side entry clutch fork. Good luck finding a real one. There is a botched up HK327 one on Ebay at the moment for $890!

The usual part you will see is 3858403, which was used on the US Saginaw cars. It has a left hand entry clutch fork. This is the number on the casting when the left hand side entry has been "knocked out", leaving the part number on the right hand "knockout".

As Byron said, you need to be careful here, as there are two flavours of this number. Pre 1966, the casting number was 3858403, but the part number was 3858401. It was left hand entry and did not have the boss for the slave cylinder on the right hand side or, presumably, the "knockout".
In 1966 the design was changed to include the "knockout" and the boss for a right hand side mounted slave cylinder to accommodate right hand drive cars. At this time the part number for the bellhousing was changed to match the actual casting number - 3858403. On a post 1966 3858403 the right hand boss is present but usually not tapped.

From my point of view the only piece missing from the puzzle is what part number is actually on the casting when it is configured as part number 3858402, with the right "knockout" removed.
Perhaps Gerard, Rigpig or someone with a factory 307 or 327 HK manual could oblige by confirming the number. If it follows the pattern established by 3858403, I think it will be as per the part number, 3858402.

I'm not familiar enough with HK to know for sure, but if you are not worried about originality is there any reason you cannot use a 3858403 bellhousing and a left entry clutch fork/slave cylinder, like the HT and HG do?

P.S. I don't really think the "knockout" can actually be knocked out easily, and they certainly wouldn't do it in production. It is more likely a casting pattern convenience, with the pattern/mould/die able to be configured for left or right entry with removable parts.

Thanks hk1837 those links were very educating. Explained a lot. Gm5735 im not to worried about total originality so maybe a lh entry may be a simpler and cheaper option. Either way im gonna need one of these bellhousings or maybe a castlemaine rod shop one but prefer at least something that looks similar. Now to find one! Thanks guys for all your help.

The bellhousings are easy, it is the slave bracket that is gold. Dellow used to make them but not sure if they still do. Jeff Dellow did me one specially about 8 years ago.
