We removed the engine and box and front end over the weekend.
This driveline seems to be untouched I dont think the engine has ever been apart.
Dandenong built December 68

Just a few details I noticed about the gearbox.
As usual for Dandenong theres no sign of paint on it.
There seems to be only one zinc plated linkage, the other two are bare metal.
The reverse switch and its bracket are zinc (silver) not passivated zinc (gold)
Bolts and washers are all black.
Linkage levers are black.
Build date for the box E228 and E238 on the extension housing.

The breather was missing so who knows how many rocks are in there.

It's Moving along now.
I've seen that finish on the shift rods and levers a few cars now, as well as all zinc.
The reverse switch is correct as natural zinc.
The bolts are normally phosphate black, as you've noted.
If you unbolt the reverse switch bracket you should see a pad underneath with a four character date stamp.
Mine (Dandenong car) is raw cast iron and had a paint splash on the bottom of the main casting which may have had some assembly significance.

What bellhousing casting number do you have?

Good score on the reverse light switch. You'd have to be happy with that, as I've seen them between $350 and $650 on the tiny tot auction site.

Thanks for the bell housing cast number. That confirms that it does not follow the US pattern, where the left hand entry version is cast number 3858403, and the part number is the same.

Yours, the right hand entry type, is part number 3858402, but cast number 3858404. I thought they were only used on right hand drive cars, but apparently some early LHD Corvettes used them.

Gerard is the stencil king, I wonder if he has noticed those letters on his HK?

Had a look at the gearbox from my car but can't see any paint marks on it. If there were they probably were removed when it was cleaned before the box was checked. The bellhousing has the same number on it as noted above - 3858404 The shift rods were as noted above also. Only the front shift lever is black as far as I can tell. Didnt see anything in the reversing switch area.
Have been cleaning up the clutch slave cyclinder parts and mounts and need some fine detail on the following points:
Is the slave cyclinder mounting bracket painted or bare?
If it is painted, what colour?
The spring on the clutch fork to slave cyclinder has a square shape one end and normal shape on the other end (I think this is the original one) is there a reason for this? i.e. install square end to clutch fork?
Haven't got the original bellhousing to block mounting bolts as they were seperated a long time ago. Can anyone supply close up photo of the correct ones? Will add some photos of a few bolts I have when I can get the photo system to work again

Thanks for these photos. I have three bell housing bolts that match those shown and note that the two bolts holding the plug lead bracket near the distributor are the same. Were these type of bolts used for that bracket on your engine? Will use these for now and find two more later.

Some photos

Hi Gerard, all of my intake manifold bolts including the two for the plug lead holder are all just standard high tensile bolts.
No washers installed under any of the bolts, that seems a bit strange but I think its correct?
My manifold had been removed previously so I dont know if this is correct.

Looks like the two bolts you currently have for the plug lead holder were originaly for the bell housing.

2doorstore00 on eBay seems to agree, he dosent include washers.

Don't forget bellhousing bolts afaik should be painted as the bellhousing went on prior to paint.

Thanks for the replies. Will tidy up fit the bellhousing bolts then paint. Speaking of painting these bolts and looking at the colour of the single bolt in the third photo against the colour of the motor, not a great deal of difference but have a few more questions about that
Is the paint on this bolt closer to the colour that was originally used on these engines?
Can you get the original colour from any supplier or is it a paint matching process?

Any thoughts on whether the slave cylinder spring with the square style end shown in the last photo is original or not. This end fits tidily in the clutch fork.

The paint is the same as HD-HR X2/186S. X2 Engine red I think it was called. Hard to get today though as you can't get leaded red tinter.

Welcome back to civilisation Wayne.

The bellhousing bolts should all be flange head type. They are US sourced and are part number 3828782. There should be 6, all the same.
The head has a recess and they will most likely have a head marking of "EWF", "RSC", "A" or "M". They often have an unthreaded section about 3/8" long, although I have seen fully threaded ones also.

The inlet manifold uses two of these same bolts in the location where the "harbour bridge" plug lead support is bolted over the top of the inlet manifold. I think Gerards pictures show this. The remaining 10 bolts are supposed to be 3/8"-16 UNC 1-1/8" long, and will most likely have an "RSC" head marking. There are an additional two "mystery" bolts listed in the parts list, which are 3/8"-16 UNC 1-3/8". I've never been able to reconcile where these are supposed to go, as there are only 12 holes.

Gerard, I think that fork return spring may be a ring in. It doesn't seem to be heavy enough gauge and the square formed end doesn't seem right. Waynes looks to be heavier gauge, and seems the same as my HT, which is the same part number as the HK one.

As Byron suggested, the paint code is Dulux 526-08929, Holden X2 engine red, which is for all Chev engines in HKTG. It is different from the 253/308 colour.

The formulation is:

Holden X2 engine red
Tinter setting
34178 0
16927 413
00740 429
01012 496
16934 500

lead content 24%
526-08929
group 3

As Byron noted, the high lead paint is no longer freely available, so that formula may be useless to you.
I know that, for example, Eastern Auto Paints in Melbourne have the formula in their engine enamel range, and I'm sure paint suppliers closer to you can do the same thing.
