G'day all,

I'm not into Commodores,never owned one and only own and work on anything with a carby hence this question re VN Commodore Coil Pack/DFI Module Interchange.

My dad has an original bog stock standard 10/89 VN Commodore Exec with V6, Auto ( if auto makes a difference )

It has been playing up with occasional non start issues and breakdown issues, some when hot , others when cold.

A while back he had it code tested ( not by me, I only work on carbied cars ) and the test came up with suspect DFI module.

I'm going to replace the DFI module and coil pack but seem to not be able to find the old type DFI and coil pack anywhere.

His coil pack is the so called all-in-one unit " choc block top " type coil pack which I believe only went from 88 to somewhere into the 90's ??

There seems to be a glut of the later VN onwards round type individually replaceable 3x individual coils and DFI modules around.

My question is:-

Can his early type coil pack/DFI module be retro-fitted with the later type 3x coil pack AND DFI module ?

Is it " plug and play " or will there be harness fitment problems ?

Any constructive help/advice appreciated,

Thought I'd better add that the fuel pump was replaced about 18 months ago....

And I plan on replacing the crank angle sensor as well.......

It is plug & play to put a later one on with the 3 separate coils. You can use all the way up to VY on the VN, and it will work fine.

As you may or may not have read in another thread I posted in, take a good look at the wiring int he DFI plug, as the terminals can back out of the housing and cause an intermittent cut-out fault (both hot & cold).

No, didn't see that thread of yours, if you could throw me a link that would be great, though I do understand what you mean about one of the plug terminals slipping past its captive and only just making contact with its partner terminal when the plug connection is closed, thus causing a high electrical resistance and intermittent connection.

Happens a fair bit with plug connections in general from experience.

Yep, exactly what happens (and the resulting heat softens the plastic & lets it release even more).

Just read that link and your info, good expansion information there for me to go on.

Got a " choc block top " coil pack/DFI module from local wreckers today, I don't normally buy used electrical parts such as this but when I'm going at it a bit in the dark so-to-speak in the diagnosis of the problem and the elimination process, the much cheaper used will do.

Once I eliminate the problem I'll buy a new coil pack/DFI module.

Local wrecker looks after me and is good to deal with, gave me 12 month warranty on the coil pack, most only warrant for 30 days.

Have just bought a new crank angle sensor from Evilbay as well, the earlier " white one " as it's called, from what I've read the " white one " is the " RIGHT ONE " for early VN's !! ?????????

My dads VN is a 10/89 and engine number VH1091165 which puts it under the cutoff number sequence for the later " black one " so I've read ??.

Correct ????????
