Hi guys,I am in the process of rebuilding an HX Monaro and have used the chassis rail off another HX to replace the damaged one. Do I need to re stamp the rail or just inform the RTA of what I have had to do.Cheers.

What you've done as far as the legal and registrable identity is turned the HX GTS into whatever the rails came from, so it is essentially now a HX Caprice or a HX Belmont Wagon or whatever the rails came from.
What you need to do (assuming NSW) is get a blue slip for the unregistered vehicle, and go to the RTA (or whatever it's called today) and create a new registration. You'll probably have to have a receipt for the new vehicle (ie for the rails) as it is essentially now a different vehicle. They may want you to pay stamp duty on the value of the vehicle as it is a new vehicle to you now (as it has a chassis number different to the one that was on it before. This is irrelevant anyway if you have never had the vehicle registered in your name with its old chassis number). |

Thanks for the advise, the rails came off another car I owned which I de registered about 10yrs ago and kept for parts I also bought the GTS off a bloke previously to that, all above board- after he wrote the front off - in the hope of eventually restoring it and it has been a work in progress ever since, recently completed. Hence I need to register it. I may just go and seek some advise from the RTA as I'm in Vic. Not sure where the chassis number is ,is it on the ID plates or is it on the body - firewall? Thanks again TJ.

Chassis number is on the rails, not far from the steering box. The original chassis number for the GTS is on the compliance plate, will look like AHX24567S (or end in M or A or B). As you owned the car with the new rails previously it is simply a re-rego in your name. Old rego papers will help. Hopefully it was a sedan originally, not a wagon or coupe! |

I wouldn't recommend cutting out the chassis number section of the rail and welding it back together so the numbers stay the same because that would be illegal.
