I was alway under the impression that the WB followed HQ-HZ factory air with the GM A6 with the STV to regulate temp.

Got my Oct 84 WB De Ville a/c going and it has a thermostat that makes the compressor cut in and out every 10sec or so. You can see a blue flash through the top of the thermostat as it does so.

I had a proper look today. It looks factory to me. (See pics). The second pic is where the thermostat wiring joins the loom.

Can you repair these things, or can I get a used one from a Commodore VH-VK? I want to keep it looking factory.

Also have feeble (cold) air coming out of the vents, and hot air when I floor it.

So I'm guessing that the vacuum pods are stuffed and maybe the heater valve playing up.

Oh well, almost there with nice aircon in the WB!

The vacuum servo will be stuffed as you said. Nice job to replace one of them, not.
Not sure on the thermostat but it looks the same as mine.

Did you get new or reco vacuum servos, wbute?

Was it a dash-out job to get to them?

Used some second hand ones I had. Yeah you have to pull most of the dash out to get to the inside heater box. But there were a couple of studs that went through the firewall that had nuts on them. I remember they were awkward to get to. I would replace the heater core while you were in there.
I think I just ran the engine and tested the servos with the vacuum line for the heater tap.

Getting back to ExportHolden's original question. Unlike HQ-HZ Frigidaire systems, which use an STV (Suction Throttling Valve), the WB system is similar to the VB-VC Harrison systems, which use a CCOT type valve & a regular thermostat to control the clutch cycling.

It sounds like your system is low on refrigerant. The fact that the thermostat is cycling so quickly is evidence of this. Make sure you have at least 950gm of gas (I am assuming R134a), otherwise the restrictor tube will freeze up & cause the thermostat to switch quickly.

Dr Terry
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

With the vacuum pods, I'm wondering if feeble compression at 257,000km might be part of the problem. I reckon this car must've had cam and lifters along the way cos it runs better than my last WB Stato with 212,000km (and noisy lifters). Haven't yet done a compression test to know where the engine's at.

When the engine's cold the air vent flow is much better. When the engine's warmed up, it's feeble even on max IV speed. In fact, this happened with my last Stato too.

So I'm wondering if a vacuum canister might help. Thought I'd chuck one in with a T-piece and see what happens. What do you guys reckon? That and vacuum-testing the pods Might save a bear of a job pulling them out. Or not, Dunno.

On another note (says he, chucking on the thickest flame suit I can find), I've tried HyChill. So I expect my reco A6 compressor to seize, but before that I will be cooked in an almighty gas explosion. I do like to live on the edge :)
