Just wondering, does the early version of these in a VR V8 still have the speedo cable connector on it?
Reason I ask is thinking about maybe seeing if one of these will fit in the HK GTS when we fit the 350 to it, rather than using an old TH350. Car is originally and currently a 5.0L auto.
Looking to get a good used box and run it with an MSD or B&M transmission controller if it will fit without floor mods. If a VR box has the speedo connector then I can avoid spending $ on a speedo cable driver, ie use an inline speed sensor with a cable hanging off the box.
If the VR box doesn't have it then I'd look to a newer box. In that case, fitment wise is a VTII-VZ 4L60/65E from an LS1/2 powered car essentially the same box as the one from a VR-VS V8? Can you bolt it behind a SBC just using the appropriate torque converter? Is the rear mount in the same place (or thereabouts) as a TH350/TH700 or are they further back?

VP was the last 4L60 with a gear on the output shaft, and a gear driven speed sensor, that can be replaced by a cable. This changed from the start of production in VR, and the VR/VS 4L60E use a 2-wire reluctor as a speed sensor, and a magnetic toothed ring on the output shaft to generate a mild AC voltage swing in the reluctor. |
Cheers,

Thanks Mick. Dr Terry talked to me about this too, can I use the extension housing off a VN-VP on a VR-VS box, and simply replace the magnetic ring with the speedo drive gear?
From what I can tell a VN-VS V8 box will bolt straight to a SBC using the smaller SBC flex plate, whereas an LS 4L60/65E needs a special torque converter? |

What about using the stronger 4L80e/4L85e? Stronger from factory, so not as much needed to beef it up. But may have a bit bigger case if you want to put it into the stock tunnel. What is the speedo drive like on these??

Won't fit the HK, far dearer and harder to get. It is only a 300-330hp 350. Flat tops, 59cc alloy LT1 heads, 350hp/350 Corvette hydraulic cam, Edelbrock Performer, 7029282 Quadrajet and HEI dizzy. Doesn't need ay stronger box than a 4L60E or 4L65E. If these boxes can handle a 300kW LS1 engine they'll be fine behind this engine! |
