I'm keen to piggyback a camera off the power supplied to the loom at the rear of the auto-dim rear view mirror of my Captiva, but can't find any information on the wiring there.
Does anyone know the specifics of that connector and voltages presented there?

Most auto-dimming mirrors are made by the same OEM, and have pretty much the same pinouts for the important wires.
If the brand on the back of your Captiva mirror is Donnelly or Gentex, then it should have a 7-pin plug on the back of it. It won't be fully populated - it will only have 2, 3 or 5 wires in it.
If you have this 7 pin plug, then the 2 wires closest to the middle of the mirror are the ones you need - pin 1 is +12V ignition switched, and pin 2 is earth.
Don't worry about any other additional wires in the plug - these do functions like cutting the dimming when in reverse - you're only interested in the first 2.
I have put several of these Gentex mirrors into cars - Holden ran them in the Caprice for a while (with the homelink crap on it too) some of the late Magna/Verada/380 models had them, and top-line FG Falcon & SY/SZ Territory also ran/still run the Gentex/Donnelly mirrors. As they are also widely used in the USA in GM products, there's a good chance yours will be a Gentex/Donnelly.

Thanks Commodorenut, This is very useful. It is the 5-wire variant, but unluckily the working space between the back of the plug and windscreen is so tight it is unlikely I can pull the plug out without some way of levering it off, so will probably have to part from that idea of creating a power socket for a camera.
