Pulled my springs out today and noticed both of them are bare metal no sign of black paint.
The only paint is brushed on orange and it runs down the full length of each spring.
Must have been the Dandenong way to ensure they didnt get the different springs mixed up.

Seems theres a few unpainted area on Dandenong cars, water pump/fan pulley, gearbox, front springs.

Just had a look a these springs here off a Pagewood 327 with p/n # 7449997.
There appears to be remains of black paint on them and an orange or red stripe of paint up the length of the spring.
Maybe you could carefully scrape off some of the orange paint, you may get a clue of the colour of the steel that had been protected
from corrosion over the years by the orange paint or if there is any other colour paint under the orange.

Appears to be remnants of black paint on the spring in the pic and there also appears to be red paint under the orange.

Yeah it has red under the orange, maybe they put down red-lead primer before the orange, thats kinda what it looks like.
Seems a strange thing to do.

No sign of black under the red or orange on either spring.
Dandenong line workers obviously didnt enjoy painting very much.
