IIRC the 120 number finished in 65/66.

In 1965 the Cortina GT500 (120 built) blitzed the field, so they increased the minimum build number to 200 for 1966. This eliminated the Cortinas leaving the Mini Cooper Ss with no opposition.

Paint questions are a difficult issue, because there were so many psudo metallics in the FX/FJ/FE days.

One that comes to mind is Etna Maroon Metallic, which was a dark red., so could be one of the answers to Q1. There were many two-tone schemes also.

White Hot Holden. It wasn't really a different car though, just a special price. It was a standard HT V8 Kingswood sedan in two different trim colours. Might have had discs from memory but that was pretty much a standard build vehicle for stock. Some do regard this car as the first Limited Build Package. To me it is the GTS327 but as stated before circumstances and demand dictated more be built. Dr Terry has a good point with the EH S4 too.

The White Hot should really be considered a proper package though. Although it was a standard car, it still left the factory gate with a set configuration of options, available in only one paint colour & a choice of 2 interior trim colours.

It comprised:-

A 80469 Kingwood sedan with
253 V8 M15 column manual
Kashmir White 1192 (568-11401) Only
Interior Trim - Gold (11E) or Blue (12E)
J52 Power Front Disc Brakes
N91 Sports Wheel Discs
P26 Whitewall Tyres

As you say it was a 'price package', but a package just the same.

Can't disagree, but it wasn't a car to be viewed as a different entity like an SS for example was. You could walk into a dealer and simply choose 1192 and 11E or 12E any tick:

There would be no way to pick the car apart from one of the special price cars that GMH built, very much unlike the SS, the GTS327 or even the S4 which I think you'd pick by its build timeframe and being a 179 manual.

Yeah, fair point, but it's still a 'package' from a manufacturing standpoint.

With the S4 there are many minor important differences but the easiest is the big fuel tank & the factory-fitted vacuum brake booster.

...apparently all the 1963 S4's were painted red with a white roof ?...everything beyond that was just a 179M

I agree it was a package, but so were the packages in HD and HR, albeit not offered as a "special" price like the White Hot Holden was. I like your S4 answer far better!

Sorry, detective, another urban myth.

EH S4 had a list of many minor changes, some of which carried over to the later 179M in Feb 1964 & some that didn't. It was a lot more than just a 179M.

A friend of mine runs an EH S4 register & has a list of the various details on each car known to exist & the colour choice is as broad as regular production cars.

I know of at least 2 blue cars & one in Quondong.

I'd make it 5 (or more) for the SS if you include the filter "1st Belmont or base spec". For instance first V8 as standard engine


Every HT V8 Belmont model had a V8 standard fitment: 0435, 0469, 0470 and 0480 were all 253 standard.

Another for the SS may be the 1st Holden with vinyl features rather than paint? It is also the first Holden that I can think of that came standard with either rally rims or sports instruments outside GTS.

Q1 is correct as far as I know. This was based upon what Leo Pruneau told me, primarily in discussion about a styling clinic paint HJ Premier that tuned up - it was a metallic red. Leo thought it may have been a styling clinic car for the LE's colour. Metallic Red was new to GMH from what Leo said.

Q2 answered in post 59 & 65.

I still reckon that Etna Maroon (Met) 207-7457 on an FE Special, counts as the first metallic red.

Maroon is a dark red, is it not ?

Hi Dr Terry .. the list of S4 bits is pretty well documented (leading up to and beyond the Armstrong 500 in 1963) but it's the specific colour of these 1963 "homologation" cars that is the main thrust of the question. what other colours were on offer for that period just before the "Great Race" ?

Agree, Maroon is a dark Brownish Red.
I always thought the HX LE was Maroon anyway, or perhaps Burgundy may be a better description.
