I think this car is a genuine L30 M21 HK Monaro. Very, very rare. Anyone on the Gold Coast want to investigate it further? It looks like it is a Marlin Turquoise L30, M21 most likely 3.36 LSD and 5" rims. The chassis number belongs to the BODY tag but it is slightly out of whack compared to my Woodsman Green HK 337 which again hints at a non-standard build. What is it that peaks your interest in this car Hk? Unless I can't see it doesn't appear to have a Salisbury hump either?

The Salisbury diff hump is what peaked my interest in the first place. The photo is small but there is something in front of the tank. It may be fabricated or it may be bog to match the big tank it used to have in it (read the text) or it may just be something very rare (L30 M21 HK Monaro). |

You'd want to check it out in person and look for other telltales, but as you say good possibility.

Yes, L30 was 307.
L30 - 307 L31 - 308H L32 - 253H L33 - 253L L34 - 327
L30 got re-used for 350ci engine in HQ, L34 got re-used for the higher compression 308 in early LH. L32/L33 essentially remained until the end of red V8 and L36 was the 4BBL 253H in VC/WB. L31 remained until the end of 308 in VK. I'm not sure if the Bedford low comp 253 remained as L33 or if it was something else. It was an XT5 engine but didn't have a 4BL carb which on the high comp 4.2L XT5 engine required the change to L36. There was also L43 - 5.0L (Bedford BV prefix).

Yes I think that is correct Terry, I think that VB finished before HZ though? Have you ever found out what L35 was? |

What I have seen is a late HZ 3.3L cast on the block with the correct prefix for that HZ 1 tonne and the cyl head was cast different on the top side just above the in and exhaust manifold, where all the other red heads have a the L or H cast and PN and all along that side, this late head had a more like blue head type casting that just sloped down, not flat and then curved like all the reds I have seen, it was not a blue head and it had the std red intake and exhaust manifold. That engine was all original the rocker cover had not even been lifted and it had the blue motor valve rotors. I have the casting dates somewhere as well.

It didn't have one as it was the standard engine for the model. HK only got one for 327 as the 327 was originally supposed to be optional on other models like Premier, and GTS327 was going to be an option package on GTS just like GTS350 sedan was in HQ. |

The difference in time of the VC & WB release dates is only 3-4 weeks depending on whether you are talking press release dates or showroom sale dates. But I would have thought that being so close that Red motor production for both was ceased at the same time. I'm not sure what lead time there would be from engine build date to vehicle build date, but given they had to stockpile engine assemblies for VC/WB release it's quite probable that Red motor production ceased much earlier, maybe even in late 1979. Why would they use the PO number L36 for the Red 4.2 for VB, yet L32 for HT-HZ & LH/LX. Other anomalies exist in 6-cyl codes for Toranas versus those used in HQ-HZ. e.g. the 2850 lo-comp engine has the code L21 for HQ on, but the same engine has the code LD2 for Torana. Another anomaly exists in Commodore, where the V6 is coded LG2 for VN to VS , but LN3 for VT-VY. Even though the newer Ecotec was released for VS it used the same code as the older VN-VR V6, not the VT-VY Ecotec code. Dr Terry |
