Just fitted a power steering kit on my hj. Installed the short steering arms and now the steering is toeing in obviously due to the shorter length arms. I have a bit of a drive to get a wheel alignment, don't want to stuff a new pair of tyres. What the easiest way to roughly align the wheels, Is there a measurement between tie rod ends or could I measure from the centre of the tyres front to rear until I get equal measurements.

basic wheel alignment would be to measure centre to centre of front and back of the front tyres and equalize. not perfect but should get you there and steering wheel probably wont be in right position Edited by user Friday, 28 July 2017 7:34:48 PM(UTC)

A string line either side of the car, parallel to the centre line and at axle centre height. Measure from the string to the front and rear of each wheel rim at axle centreline height and make them the same for zero toe in.

simple. get 2 drawing pins and a tape measure. one pin in the centre of each front wheel tread. make sure they are as close to lining up as possible. roll the car so the pins are as close to centre line of the wheels measure the distance. roll the car forward on a flat level service as far as you can with allowing for the tape measure to go across the rear of the wheels you can't get it exactly half way up the wheel as the body gets in the way. measure . do this twice to check it is as right as possible. this will give you a fairly acceptable alignment but don't rely on it forver it is not perfect.

Thanks to all who replied, just measured front to rear of the front tyres as KBM described and have achieved the same measurements, will do until I get to the steering shop. I needed to adjust the drivers side tie rod ends out at least a further 10 mm each side from there original position to align the steering. Now the drivers side tie rod ends are lengthened at least twice the amount on the adjustment threads as the passenger side tie rod ends. Is this normal?

Probably not, but it just means the pitman arm wasn't in the centre of its travel when you adjusted it. The wheel alignment place should fix it.

Ok, got that. I will reposition the pitman arm when I take the steering box back out as it has a small leak from the sector shaft, doesn't seem to be leaking from the pitman arm seal so that's a bonus. Seller said it had no leaks, chance you take when buying used parts. Anyone know of an honest reconditioner, might look at getting the box reconditioned. I'm on the mid north coast nsw. Many thanks.

if your not in a hurry to get to the steering shop start by backing off the drivers side tie rod ends 5mm and lengthen the passenger side 5mm. when you put the box back in turn steering wheel full left to right and count how many turns, then centre the steering wheel to half way and then you can take the measurements and adjust both sides equally. this will save a lot of time at the steering shop especially if their not familiar with older front ends. sorry, should've explained that bit first time.
