I have a HZ V8 Premier with a factory aircon system using a Delco GMA6 compressor. After being in storage for a few years, and just now back in operation, it appears that the aircon compressor has died - it's refusing to hold any refrigerant. I've been advised it needs replacing.

I've seen a fair bit of discussion on these forums about the original GMA6 compressor and what might be best to put back in the vehicle when charging with R134a refrigerant. It's been suggested that I could put in a Sanden 8031 compressor with a set of adapter mounting plates, a Pro6TEN all aluminium compressor or even fit back a new/rebuilt A6 compressor. Are "new" A6 units still available??

I appreciate that air-conditioning in a vehicle isn't a simple A/B comparison as the drive speed isn't constant, the variables are numerous and nothing is really perfect especially when using a different refrigerant with existing (and fixed) factory evaporator / condensor sized for R12 gas.

I like the idea of keeping the under bonnet arrangement as stock looking as possible, but the need to have a useable air-conditioner overrides that aim - if there is something that really makes a difference.

Can anyone offer any advice/experience/recommendations on the matter please?

Thanks,
Daz

They are available new and refurbished, look on ebay.com, delivery prices are not too bad either. Dr Terry will probably have an idea where to find one locally too.

From what I've read while pondering the resurrection of the factory A/C in the Skylark, you'll need to get the POA valve recalibrated for R 134.

A link to an Oldsmobile forum on the POA valve:

And another that may help.
