I'm about to service the powerglide in the Hk. I've always been with the manual that insists with bare gasket only for the pan, but with new sealants out these days is there one good for auto fluid? No matter how clean I get the mating surfaces and use the torque wrench to factory specs I've had a hit/miss result. I always check the pan for correct straightness. What's the best way? The original cork & the later cork/neoprene gasket always seem to 'weep' no matter what you do. We always used to joke that there was no such thing as a dry automatic transmission.
It is even worse nowadays because the modern fluids (Dexron II, IIE & III) are less viscous than the original Dexron. It appears that no sealant improves the situation, because it is the gasket itself which is porous.
All is not lost however, there is now a gasket material called Duraprene, which is very much like a thick dense cardboard with a sealant already applied to both sides. AFAIK it is made for most popular autos, so a Powerglide one should be available. It is commonly seen on modern autos like TH700/4L60 etc.
You already fixed one of the biggest dramas, by straightening the pan. The bolts are often overtightened which distorts or dimples the flange.
I am on annual holidays ATM, but will check availability when I get back to work on Monday (8th Jan).
