Hi All,

Does anybody know what a cable kickdown Trimatic with the code H V (definitely not H Y) would be out of?

I am guessing it is out of an HG or LC maybe?

Any advice would be appreciated.

A Trimatic with an HV code is out of an HG 186-S with a T-bar console shift. It is unique in that it has the shifter on the LH side of the transmission.

Thanks for your advice.

I can see how the left hand side floor shift aspect of the transmission is unique, but am intrigued that you mention 186S - did the S motors have a slightly different transmission (well, internals) to the standard 186?

Yes, they did. Each Trimatic is closely matched to each engine. For example in HQ the 173, 202, 253 & 308 transmissions were different to each other. The V8 ones obviously had a larger bell housing, but the valve bodies in each was tailored to match that particular engine's torque curve.

Hi Dr Terry,

interesting that Holden went to that sort of effort, given they scrimped elswhere - I am presuming the Powerglides are all the same except for 6 vs V8?

Would you happen to know the code for an HG 186 Floorshift Trimatic?

An HG 186 floor shift Trimatic has the code HB. Don't get too concerned about the minor differences in calibration between the different Trimatics. Over the years a lot has changed, the clutch materials & fluids are much improved & the auto trade has vast experience in making these boxes work well.

AFAIK all HD-HT 6-cylinder Powerglides were the same except for the floor shift variety, which only differ in the shape of the selector lever. There are 2 distinct types of V8 Powerglides though. The ones which fits behind the 307-350 Small Block Chev V8s have a one-piece housing., whereas the HT 253/308 Powerglides are basically 6-cyl units with a unique bolt-on bell housing. Again each of those have either column shift or floor shift style levers on them.

Just to expand on Terry's info, the HT-HG 253/308 powerglides whilst being a 6cyl box with a unique bellhousing, also used the tail-housing from a 307/327/350 powerglide thus used a similar gearbox crossmember to the SBC box, and also used the LH side speedo cable and the SBC style crossover mechanism for the column shift examples. The 6cyl powerglides used a RH side speedo connection and shared the gearbox crossmember with a all syncro 3spd IRC
