Would appreciate any description, or preferably pictures or illustrations, of a rear cross member for a HT Holden with a powerglide and Chev v8 engine. I've got modified ones and would like to get a standard one to fit to my vehicle.

Old memory but pretty sure there is four different V8 powerglide HT-HG gearbox crossmembers:

SBC column shift.
SBC console shift.
253/308 column shift.
253/308 console shift.

I can't remember the specifics of how they differ but I can tell you the SBC engine rear sits back about 3/4" further than a 253/308 in HT-HG, so the box is pushed back as well. This is why the pink tailshaft (HK-HT 307A banjo) is 55.35" and yellow tailshaft (HT-HG 253/308 auto with banjo) is 56.08", ie approx. 0.75" difference.

Also an old memory, I think the above pairs look similar (307/350 or 253/308) but they are different just like the 4spd crossmembers look similar and can be made to fit each other but don't work properly. I remember if you try to use a 253/308 manual HT-HG crossmember on a SBC manual you can make it fit (as the gearbox mounts are slotted) but can't drain the box oil properly. I also remember trying to fit a HT 308 and powerglide out of a Kingswood sedan into a HK Premier using a HK V8 auto crossmember, wouldn't work as the box moved forward that 3/4", plus the HK V8 auto tailshaft was too short!

Hopefully this helps a bit, and hopefully someone else can help you with exact identification of the one you want.

Thanks HK1837, that's helpful info. My HT was originally a 6 cyl manual but is now Chev 327 with console shift Powerglide. I have several modified cross members and the one fitted was said to be ok for SBC350 but has a problem with the rear handbrake cable assembly (futher complicated due to having HQ rear axle) so I want to instal the correct support. I have seen one for sale which has an additional plate, mounted approx 120 mm forward of the standard position, for the gearbox mount (so it has 2 gearbox mounting positions). I'd just like to know how to identify the correct one for mine.

All HT and HG gearbox crossmembers are identified by a stamped 1/4" single letter on the underneath, drivers side. There are, across HT and HG about 20 different types, some with small differences and some with large differences.
The 307/350 console shift Powerglide one will be stamped K or U. They are unlike all the others as they have an extension plate welded onto them.

Thanks gm5735 for the reply. That really helps. Is the extension plate on the engine side of the normal mounting? If it's possible to get the approximate length of the handbrake bracket and also the distance the extension plate mount holes are from the standard mount holes, I'd really appreciate it. The cross members I have are modified so I'd like to get the standard dimensions for my driveline.
