Hi All.
I think I asked about mig welders a while back but can't find the posts?
I want to buy a Mig that will be capable of good welds for floor pan, sub frames, guards etc. However, I would like it to be capable of welding a trailer should I decide to build one down the track. Or to make special tools for whatever I want. Up to 8mm/5/16 of an inch.
I prefer to buy better quality stuff knowing that it will last for years.
I remember buying a bosch 4" grinder and bosch half inch hammer drill back in the early 80's. The salesman tried to sell me cheap black and decker units and I told him I didn't want to come back in a year or two to buy another lot and I would probably still be using the industrial bosch ones in 30 years time! I have had them for more than 35 years already.
Thanks.
Ron

I can only comment on the mig I have. WIA 270. It’s brilliant, I have welded 10mm plate down to the bracket that held the muffler on my chainsaw, maybe 1mm pressed sheet.

Just buy a name brand like WIA, Lincoln etc. Not cheap Chinese junk.

Hi.
Most migs up to 250amps will be suitable, the bonus is up to that current will run off single phase 15a supply.
I weld for a job and use good Millar, Lincoln welders at work. But guess what? For my own lighter work I own a cheap chinese mig, branded as Mitech here in NZ. Its awesome and for the type of work you describe you dont need an expensive pulse mig. Ive owned and used the Mitech 250 for 8 years and put quite a few spools of wire through it, its never missed a beat.
Cheers
Ian
