Just looking for advice on this. Playing with locations for a/c compressor and power steer pumps for the HK. Pretty sure I’ll put the alternator in the 1969 location, and fitting a Moroso electric water pump.

Steering rack is Ford Territory. I was going to run an LS steering pump off a bracket made to mount where the fuel pump was but been considering an electric steering pump. It would mean just the alternator and a/c compressor with a single belt. Otherwise it’d be the alternator and steering pump on one belt and the a/c comp by itself.

You need an older electric pump like the Astra - more modern ones have a CAN connection, and some of them won't run unless they see the right signal from the CAN comms system.

The common Astra ones are easy to fit - you run high current wiring from the battery (via a fusible link) to the terminals on the pump, and switch the lower current wires on the pump via an ignition relay - all the high power switching is done within the pump itself (internal relays).

For the lines, you simply get 2 of the right tails, and get a hydraulic hose crimped together for the pressure side of the pump to the rack - the return line can be simple barbed tails with a reinforced rubber return hose fitted with hose clamps (or you can get another high pressure hose made). Holden actually used this very method in the VL V8, from the factory....

If there were some way of driving it in the HK, the last model Territory racks were fully electric assist, contained within the rack housing - no hydraulics, but they need a computer to drive them correctly.

I have seen plenty of installation write ups but no real in depth reports on what it works like.

Also been thinking about the drive belts, if I use an electric pump I’m probably better off using a long nose SBC pulley setup with a single belt for the alternator and another single belt for the SD508 compressor. There are also available long nose pulleys with single or double 5 or 6 rib drives on them so I could use a single 5 or 6 rib belt for the alternator and compressor and just setup a tensioner off an LS or similar. Not sure if i’d Need an idler with only the two loads but that wouldn’t be hard to add either.

It doesn't feel any different to a belt-driven pump, as the pressures & fluid volume are pretty much the same.

You'll probably need an idler to get a good wrap around the A/C compressor. For multi-rib inspiration, look at how the VS-VY Ecotec V6 uses both faces of the belt to achieve a path that gets maximum belt wrap on all the pulleys that are prone to slipping (like the A/C, followed by the power steer - which in your case you won't need). I would aim for at least 150, up to 180 degrees of wrap on the compressor.

With the alternator up above the driver side rocker cover and the A/C compressor over above the LH side exhaust manifold I'd probably get close to 180 deg wrap on the compressor with a single tensioner between the compressor and the drive pulley. It wouldn't be hard to put a small idler off the front of the intake manifold if need be though to pull the belt down between the alternator and compressor.

I was thinking about something like the below picture with the alternator top left, aircon top right and the tensioner the next one down on the right. The other is the random idler that may or may not be needed.

You want the tensioner on the "return" side of the belt run.

The 2.2L diagram is similar to the best layout for your plans - but you want the idler on the passenger side, and the tensioner on the driver's side, which is basically the "no load" side of the belt run.

If the tensioner is on the passenger side (of the engine) it will be constantly fighting belt torque.

Thanks Mick, I had actually come to that conclusion about the tensioner after I’d looked at all the aftermarket setups after typing that up. I might have to go and raid an old Holden V6 for template parts to start playing.

Personally I'd fit the Astra electric p/st pump. I know of several guys running these & they work well.

They can be hidden under the guard or even in the boot if you want. As Mick said, just run the necessary wiring (two +ve & one earth) a high pressure hose & a return hose & you're done.

That’s what i’m planning to do Terry. Can’t go in the boot but I can probably make up some brackets to fit it in the HK on the opposite side to the battery. They have a 60A fuse on them in an Astra so just need an 8AWG figure 8 across there and a relay to enable it off the ignition circuit.

I picked up a whole setup from a TS yesterday, it had about 250k on it, but it looks clean and it was cheap so worst case it allows me to set it all up and I find a lower km one later.
