The new or young red 6 motors I've had over the years have the oil go dirty earlier than expected.I've had no indications that the engines are not in sound condition,so I'm thinking maybe the oil breather is the problem.I've used the same breather and kept it clean with flushing. Can they deteriorate with age? They appear to have metal mesh or similar inside.

Have you changed the oil that you normally use, some oils will do this more so than others. I think that the old type of oil breathers had a gasket seal on the bottom and you wash them out and toss a bit of oil in them and put back on. Does it have a oil breather pipe like mid HR had going back or the PCV type at the back that needs cleaning at times or is buggered.

Are you using synthetic or mineral based oils?

I have changed brands of oil over the years but always used mineral oils.I have the original pcv set up back to the manifold and keep it clean and in good order.

I don't think the breather would be causing the oil to go dirty. I think its pretty normal for the oil to go from gold to black in say 500km from change in my experience with old holden engines

If it's running rich, doing a lot of short trips, or only idling away in the garage as "running it every now & then" maintenance, then it's likely to be getting dirty earlier from the excessive carbon that's produced in these circumstances. |

The car doesn't do many long trips.I think I'm comparing it too much with the modern engine. Thanks for your help guys.Better to have a little dirty oil than fragments of metal.
