Hi I'm trying to change rear main seal in my ht thought it was a rope type but it's the neoprene type
Have motor out, taken sump off. How do I replace upper seal? Take crankshaft out? Or can it be lifted somehow to get old one out and put new one in
Thanks morrie

Neoprene seal was what was used until around 1974-ish.

I have heard of people managing to change the rear main on a neo rear main engine with the crankshaft in however I’ve never tried it.

Seeing as it's quicker to type than get a picture from the manual up, here goes. You've got the sump off, good, now pull the rest out until there's only the rear main seal left, replace it and put it all back together again. Sucks but that's what the book says. On the v8's the book says you can tap the seal out with a soft punch and replace it by rolling the new one in while turning the crank but I don't know why that's not the same for the six.
