161 Rear Main seal Identification

Hey Guys, I have been a touch confused with the various rebuild gasket kits noting three different main seals, Rope, rubber and neoprene. So I pulled the rear main cap to hopefully identify it before ordering the kit. From what I found I believe that this is the Rubber? Known as HN017. Please let me know if I'm correct. Also I have read in one manual that the seal can be changed with crank in place (block side) by pushing one end down and when the opposite side slide through then grab it with pliers and pull it through then push new seal down in the same way but the second manual states to remove crank then press in the seal. From the level of tightness that the seal in the main cap was I can't imagine that I'd be able to "push" it through with crank in place so what is the correct way to do this? Cheers Mark.

All 161 should be neoprene seal as far as I am aware, and that is what is in the images. Someone might correct me but rubber and neoprene are the same thing.
Pulling the crank is the right way to do it. That way you can check the bearings at the same time. You'll just have to get some plastic tube to put over the rod bolts so they don't scratch the crank journals as you knock the pistons further up the bores and rotate the crank to pull the caps off the other rods. |

Engine oil seals will not be made of rubber, either natural or synthetic. The oil and heat would destroy them very quickly. Oil seals will be made of either Neoprene or Nitrile rubber.

Thanks Guys,
I will order the kit but the confusion stems from their listings that include a "rubber" (non-rope style) seal but also have an an additional note saying that early motors may require the HN017 seal which is "not included in this kit"
I have found two different profiled non-rope seals so still not sure which the kits are including. I suspect that possibly one is simply the conversion from rope (no slinger?) to non-rope so I'll just have to order the kit and see what main-seal they are supplying then buy the other one separately if required.
