Removed 253 fromHZ one tonner and opened it up. Supposed to be QR high comp engine but it’s got flat top pistons?? Full of old oil residue needs acid bath. Dizzy is seized in block, bit of INOX and wait a while. Bit of wear in the bores and larger head bolts x2 have threaded block casting broken off. Not sure how critical those two bolts are??

HT-HJ and LH - 6/76 253/4.2 are all flat tops. They are only 9:1 compression. The low comp version has dish tops. FRom HX onwards the red 4.2 had lumpy tops for 9.4:1.

Those inner valley head bolts were often broken off when people tried to torque them to the same torque as the others. The bosses were made longer from mid 1978 so all head bolts were torqued to the same figure. They aren't used at all on VN-VSIII engines.

Just had a quote to rebuild the 253 $8k, new pistons, roller cam, cam, roller rockers, lifters, etc. ACL rebuild kit is @$2200, same rods, plus new cam and roller rockers and rebore. Balancing the crank is also an option. Might just it bored out and rebuild it my self. Trimatic is going to need rebuild in Perth somewhere.

I'd be getting other quotes. 8K to rebuild a 253, seriously? Better off spending that sort of coin on a 308 if you want to stay with a Holden V8.
Here is a rebuild kit to suit 253 & 308 for under 1k. https://www.horsepowerwo...ebuild-kit-253-308-355-5

I tried to contact https://www.horsepowerwo...uild-kit-253-308-355-5, and didn't get far at all. Too busy too hard. Ill keep searching for an engine rebuilder in Perth as its a bit hit and miss here. In the meantime Ill keep looking for an intake manifold, carby, dizzy, fuel pump, oil pump etc.
Seen a video on replacing the oil gallery welsh plugs with a brass plug. Not sure why?? And cleaning up the dags in the valley with a die grinder, chamfering the oil pump holes and oil gallery tubes.
