Thought about this recently, just seeing if anyone has any 6cyl or 253/308 'glides around and easily accessible.

It is obvious that the 307, 327 and 350 Powerglides fitted to late 60's GMH assembled vehicles are fully imported. However the ones used in 6cyl application for HR-HT are obviously modified for Australian RHD use. I assume the 6cyl bellhousings are locally made - can anyone confirm if these have HOLDEN and a local casting number on them? Same for the tail-housings on these, they are made to fit the same gearbox crossmember as all-synchro 3spd and have a right hand speedo cable on them - again do these have HOLDEN on them and a local casting number?

Again, with the 253 and 308 Powerglides. These are the same basic box as the 6cyl examples, is the bellhousing local? These have the imported V8 Powerglide tail housing on them though, with the US LH speedo cable and the forward mount like a Saginaw or 307/327/350 Powerglide.

GMH's suppliers would have had the capacity to do this as they were building Trimatics at the time ready for LC and HG. It is quite eye opening when you find bellhousings made for use on Trimatics for all different types of engines with HOLDEN on them. They were used behind Chevrolet design 6cyl engines (same bellhousing pattern as SBC/BBC) in not just only South African Holden and Chevrolet but in South American vehicles. I've also seen some other wierdo ones that I can't identify.

I've got a pair of 6cyl Glides, although abit difficult to access under a bench.

Interesting that they appear to have different castings around the starter motor recess.

One of them has the stamping as shown, but I cant easily access the tail housings.

The RH one has an original Holden 6cyl tail housing on it, the other one has a tail housing off a 253/308/307/327/350 on it - it has the LH side speedo cable and mount further forward. I suspect it was a 253/308 box that has had a 6cyl pump and bellhousing put on it. But it could be a 6cyl box that has had a V8 tail housing put on it too.

Where the starter goes will just be a revision thing - one is probably HD-HR and the other HK-HG or something like that.

Good to see the HOLDEN logo - I have almost no 6cyl stuff left - I threw away tonnes of anything 6cyl when I moved about 20 years ago. Anything 6cyl went to scrap! So hard to research it today, glad to see someone kept some of it.

I got all curious after learning about one of the boxes being a mix'n'match of parts.

Pulled them both out this evening and worked out what (I think) I've got.

I think this is a V8 Glide with a 6cyl bellhousing. It appears to have a different input shaft to the 6Cyl Glide. I assume heavier duty for the V8 application?

Gave my other glide abit of a clean. I was told this came out of an HK Premier. I cannot find any Holden markings on the bellhousing however?

I did find these markings on the original 6Cyl tail housing. Perhaps a casting date? 2/67 and the 7420964 casting number within the circle 👍.

Cool.

That is a V8 pump, the converter is bigger. I think GMH used the 3L30 (that became the Trimatic) pump and converter (possibly modified) on the 6cyl Powerglide. Given what you have on the tail-housing and the bellhousing it looks like GMH imported partial 'glides and competed them here. They may even have imported them in parts and totally assembled them locally to get even more local content. I'm not sure if they were supplied from Canada rough cast and GMH machined them for the removeable bellhousing or not.

I reckon someone has gotten a 6cyl Powerglide built up properly for a 308 application and snaffled the bellhousing off that box, and just put the 6cyl housing onto that box.

I reckon the one with the 1967 tail housing is from a HR.
