Hi again, Id be stuffed without this forum & you guys giving me the answers , so thanks

Anyway, this topic, where do they go on this refurbished carb which is a tad different to what's on the 253 at moment?

New has 7 ports, existing has 4


1 Heat exchanger. To choke heat pipe in intake manifold, rear port.
2 ? Distributor. No, goes to canister purge port (oy works with 3 port canister).
3 ? To TCS solenoid that is mounted on passenger side of the engine between carb and rocker cover.
4 ? This is the vacuum source for the EGR valve used on auto engines. It has a hose off it running to the water switch on the front driver side of the intake manifold.
5 ? Goes to thermal switch underneath air cleaner housing. Other side of switch to air valve on air cleaner snorkel.
6 LH rocker cover rear PCV
7 goes to little silver canister attached to back of carb. Auto choke diaphragm




Existing carb

1 Heat exchanger. To choke heat pipe in RH exhaust manifold
2 Distributor. No, goes to little silver canister attached to back of carb (Auto choke diaphragm)
3 goes to little silver canister attached to back of carb. No, this is for distributor vacuum advance for a manual engine. Auto 253/4.2 carbs have a different vacuum source, on the canister cars pre HX they had another vacuum port down next to the PCV port, I think on earlier cars (pre 1/75) the vacuum port was connected internally to the carb differently. This is why auto and manual carbs on pre-canister cars have different carby numbers.
4 LH rocker cover rear PCV

I edited your post above and added red text.

Your existing carby is almost certainly a HT to 12/74 HJ or LH carby or possibly a 1/75 to 6/76 HJ, LH or LX manual carby.

The new carby is a HX, HZ or VB ADR27A carby and you will not use most ports. It also won't work as original with a 4 port canister if your car has one, only works with a 3 port.

Ah OK thanks again, so the carb may have been original as my Tonner is 10/74 HJ.

My manifold as you pointed out on another thread is HX & the new carb is 75-76 Auto 253

The new carb is 6/76 to 1980. Not 1975.

2. If you have a manual this might be able to be used for ported vaccuum for the distributor advance. I'm not sure if the purge signal for 3 port canister works off the same ported vacuum advance as a 4 port does. 4 port canister on a manual is just a T-piece that is shared with distributor vacuum advance, but they don't do it this way on a 3 port (ADR27A) canister car, they use a dedicated purge port.
3. This might be your vacuum source for distributor, just depends if you have a manual or auto. I think this port is full vacuum which you use for vacuum advance on an auto engine but not for a manual. If it isn't and you have an auto you can probably use a port on the brass T on the manifold behind the carby.
4. Yes, plug it.

You'd have been better off rebuilding your original carby. In all honesty I'd have changed the intake out to a KC 4BBL one and fitted a Quadrajet off a WB or VC-VH 4.2. That particular intake fits all HT to VL 253/4/2/308/304/5.0L heads. Example:

This one has been on blue or black heads so you'd just have to knock out the welch plug in the centre bolt holes and get another two (using the originals as templates) to plug the outside holes in the centre triple-holes that were used on the blue/black heads. Red heads only use the middle hole regardless of whether they are HT-HJ or HX-HZ/VB.

No. Charcoal canisters. 1974 HJ don't have one. That picture you put up is a thermal switch that screws into the front of the pollution intake manifold.

Unfortunately or maybe fortunately, mine does have a chacoal canister :) 3 port from memory

No wonder this thing is doing my head in :)

That is OK, as long as it actually works. It needs to have the right fuel tank, vapour separator and the vapour line too. It is the right canister to work with that carby.

You are better off with the canister rather than a fuel tank that just vents to air. Gets rid of the awful evaporated fuel smell.

Confirmed mine has a 4 port cannister :( !

I have sorted the vac ports on the back of the carb but there is also one @ 10mm diameter at the front

See photo, can I take the hose off that dummy pipe & fitting in the manifold & attach to the carby 10mm vac port ? & plug the manifold ?

The hose goes to the cannister port labelled carb bowl

That big one goes to a 3 port canister CARB port. In that 3 port image I put up you can see it. 4 port canister CARB BOWL does the same thing I think, but I don't think your carby can operate a 4 port as it probably doesn't have a ported vacuum port which is needed to operate that vacuum diaphragm on the 4 port.

You should be able to plug that manifold port if that is where the hose goes to at the other end.
