I've got a leak in both sides at the rear it's leaking inside the drum, I suspect it's axle oil seals. Is there also a gasket that fits on the cover plate or is that not required for to the oil seal?
It's been a while since I had axles out of a RWD car, is the bearing cup separate in these or is it all in one?

Bearing outer race is inside the housing, bearings on the axle are tapered needle rollers. There is a seal behind the bearing from memory and another gasket between the brake drum carrier and the axle housing. |

So it's probably the seal that's leaking on both sides.
With the rear assembly level, does the diff oil sit in the axle tubes and lubricate the "wheel bearings"?
If it's all level and I pull the axles will diff oil leak out the open end?
If not that's great, I can pull both axles and take them to get bearings changed.
If the diff oil doesn't come out as far as the bearings do they need to be greased before installation?
I haven't had a rear axle assembly apart in a very long time.

The oil will work its way out there Stationary it’ll stay in the centre, just pull the axles out. Drain the old oil though and change it. Bearings will be fine with a small amount of oil on them at assembly. |

If diff oil is leaking out near the rear wheel with the car level, could this mean the diff oil level is too high?
I haven't really paid attention to the level of the filler plug compared to the axle tubes.
There's drops of fluid on the floor, which could only be diff oil or brake fluid right?
If it's diff oil, would it have to be coming out past the seal on the axle before it gets to any gasket on the drum backing plate?
I'm going to have to strip it all down, but I assume the seal on the axle is supposed to keep the oil inside it, without the need for the gasket on the backing plate?

Just had the same problem, turned out it was a leaking wheel cylinder. Saved a lot of unnecessary work.

My next question is do I have to dismantle the drum brake shoes setup or can I get to the retaining nuts through the hole in the flange without removing brakes and just pull the axle and retaining plate out?

Besides taking the drum off you leave the rest of the brakes and undo the 4 nuts through the holes in the flange.
See Smitty's pick above. After removing the axle you will notice he has then put 2 nuts back on just to hold the brake backing in place whilst the axle is out

I can't find a breather on my 10 bolt Salisbury that's in my V8 HZ. Do they all have a breather?
