Hiya,
Bought a Holden M21 6cyl box off a guy with some spares. How do I tell its original other than the 2 rings on the input shaft. Came with a shifter and everything.
Is it useful as a spare for my 308?

Yes, but there is really no such thing as a 6cyl M21. I think the only car to ever get one as original were the VB Commodore rally cars. GMH did say a 6cyl M21 was optional in two different ratio sets in LJ XU1 but no production cars got one.
If it is an original close ratio 6cyl M20 out of a late LC or LJ XU1 it is of virtually no use as spares for a V8 M21 other than the case and mainshaft, 1st and 2nd gears plus the sliding selectors. All of these are normally worn out anyway other than the case.
It is also possibly a V8 M21 box that someone has stuck an XU1 input shaft into. If it is a proper XU1 input shaft and its not r00ted (most will be) then that is worth good money. Same if it is an XU1 box the cluster gear is worth good $ but again unlikely to be useable today.
Pull the side cover off and the front bearing cover and see what numbers are on stuff. |
