My Holden V8 has stopped charging while running, to the point that the battery held under 8V when I got home yesterday.
Do alternators just stop working?
I've checked for loose and broken wires and connections coming unplugged, nothing evident I can find.
The only thing I can't find, but it doesn't look like it was ever there in the first place, is a heavy earth on the alternator. There's a wire that goes to the dash light, the heavy cable to the starter solenoid positive, nothing else.
Do I have to take it to an auto electrician for them to test the alternator?

Yes, they can just stop working. Not to say there isn't another reason, but in my experience it has always been the brushes that have worn down or become jammed so they are no longer making contact that is the cause and I've just replaced the brushes.

What Sandaro has said is basically on the money.
They don't need an earth wire, the case mounting is metal to metal & that's more than enough.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |
