The car has started making a screaming noise, like a slipping fan belt or something. Just started yesterday. The wife drove it home from work stopping at lights etc with no sign of overheating, she didn’t have any problems with the steering either. I assume electric steering has a belt? Maybe not.
I popped the bonnet last night and can’t see anything. Saw the fans but no belts. I’m starting to worry if it’s a timing belt or something? Would that make these sort of noises?
As you can tell I’m mechanically illiterate. |

Had NRMA out now. Suggestion is one of the idler arms on the serpentine belt. Don’t drive it, arrange a mechanic and we will tow it. |

Ok, it’s at the mechanic. Not the serpentine belt / idler arm for water pump or alternator at all. I wish it was.
Evidently it is the PCV (?) which is made in one piece with the rocker cover. Which he can only get new, from Holden.

common Euro way of doing it (eg... BMW all straight 4/6 engines do this) I had to replace one on the partners BMW 125 M coupe... the local BMW dealer reported it U/S at a service (50k one I think) and quoted nearly $2000 for a new one, installed. Bugger that.. ! got onto a few local aftermarket BMW/Euro service places and yes ...available aftermarket, most talking high 400's up to $500 for it (including gasket and bolts which are encapsulated) Then thought? how hard is it to replace? yeah well... 3 hours to find the engine (half it is under the windscreen, under the wipers!), 30 mins to R&R and nearly 3 hours to put the ignition (coils and harness) shields and covers back in place see if you can find one |

Thanks but I’d already given the go ahead. I had a bit of a look and I could only find one at $1395, which I don’t think would be much better once installation is completed included. I saw some posts from England and Europe from a couple of years ago at £900, and similar or more Euro. Fitted.
Interesting that it is a Euro thing though. Do the Japanese do it as well? It may be something to consider on the replacement in a year or so. |
